This is David a never ever smartphone user (:

After recently receiving my first ever mobile phone, a moto g, searched this evening for a board to best help me come up to speed using an Android smartphone. Rather ironic for someone over several current years doing all the RMA debug and testing of telephony media gateway switches for a major VOIP phone system corp. Read through this Introductions forum Sticky list and as someone writing occasional documentation for decades, and an Internet person since earliest days, appreciate your detailed thorough information, well done!

Have worked in hi tech hardware here in Silicon Valley from before most of you were born but long ago stopped keeping on top of technology. It has become impossibly vast, all just changes so fast, and what was is soon history while what we once knew, used, and understood fades. I expect to struggle at times figuring out how to use my smartphone with its Android system and vast numbers of apps, thus expect to occasionally resort to asking questions on these forums after getting stuck even after carefully reading user documentation, web help sites, and web searching for answers.

This evening was wondering how to launch Google Now that I'd loaded and configured a couple days ago. I looked over several supposed how to sites for GN before finally landing on one that started by relating one needs to swipe up from the bottom of a Home screen to launch. Hmmm... I wondered why developers chose that instead of touching a screen icon? And as someone that has reviewed myriad procedures know those creating such often leave out the most obvious.

Hello David and welcome to the forums.🙋
Thank you for your kind words....we all help one another here with both hardware and software, which can indeed be difficult to understand, though the challenge is enjoyable. :)
The Moto G phones are deservedly popular devices, and we have a forum for each version. Enjoy!

Welcome to Android Central! Always glad to see someone new getting to experience the great world of Android.

Make sure to post any questions or concerns you may have while you get accustomed to your new phone!☺

Hello David, welcome to the forums! The Moto G is a great phone and I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Which model do you have? Feel free to ask anything you need.

Hi David. Welcome and thank you for the introduction. Why don't you get the Google Now launcher from the App Store and once it is installed you can just swipe to the left, it will become a permanent fixture on your Moto G. Once you start using it by swiping left you will not have to worry about launching it by pressing down on the home button or swiping it up.Just a thought. I hope that the Moto G meets your smartphone needs. If you got the 2015 version, then even better as the battery life is just simply superb on that phone.

Appreciate the greetings and encouragements, thankyou.

Had a second smartphone newbie experience this morning that will amuse you experts. :) Was stuck at the login prompt connecting into my corporate wifi network? The little popup window showed a security mode plus a userid field but not a password field? I entered my userid but it would just spin on connecting. Then finger mauled the little window in various ways but it was static. Well a couple little arrows had 1 or 2 options that were dead ends. For decades I've been troubleshooting electronic hardware and software thus am pretty good at eventually figuring things out though am not afraid to ask for help if it will save time. After about 15 minutes went over to another engineer and we spent another 10 minutes going around in circles. Then he asked me to move the scroll bar. Huh...scrollbar? Pointed to the tiny sliver of a line on the side of the window that I had not even noticed. That of course moved down to the password field haha. Then noticed his iPhone had a similar micro scrollbar on one of his windows.

Javier, via the Motorola site, customized order for an Unlocked GSM 16GB XT-1540, blue case back, red accent.

Golfdriver97, I will say the experience so far has been smooth, however I've barely touched the surface functionally thus will see. However I'd pounded the web for advice and reviews so am well aware it is considered a class leader thus along with the Android OS expect quite an experience. One key reason for getting a smartphone is to be able to evaluate how my rather large photography website I HTML/CSS hand coded a decode ago views on these new devices that one cannot really glean with just pc's. And was impressed at how nicely my pages were rendered so that is a big plus. Not one with experience to be able to evaluate smart phone ergonomics, all the top phones appear as aesthetic works of art with impressive industrial design much like one sees with current leading edge cameras. The easily removable back cover will have some utility as I plan to drill a couple very small holes through then string through a short removable loop of say 20 lb monofilament line that I can then attach a lanyard anchored to coat pockets. A bit of security against drops while out in dangerous places like ski lifts and mountain climbing.

worldspy99, yes noticed that launcher app and decided to take a look at what advantage that might be when I have some time.

Simple... access to Google Now for all screens. With an icon on your homescreen, you have to go back there first. With it bound to a pop up off the home button, you can get to Now no matter where you are.

You can get to it via an icon as well... it's called the "Google App"... look for the big G in your apps.

Welcome to Android Central! If you install an alternate homescreen launcher like Nova Launcher, you'll have more easy options to open Google Now. On my Nexus 6P, I have it set to open Google Now if I swipe up from any part of the screen (not just from the Home button), or simply if I tap the Home button while I'm on my primary homescreen.
