Help: Audio won't go through head unit - only blutooth

I had made the switch over from iPhone to Android not long ago. Same car here. Phone calls and such for the iPhone would go through the cable, as I never paired the blutooth on the phone to the car. Now with Android it appears to be forced to pair with blutooth but there doesn't seem to be an option to have calls go directly to the head unit. Is this expected behavior on the Android platform?

You get the call on your phone and not via AA?
You have the AA app installed?

Yeah, I've got Android Auto going. I've got maps and the full GUI with the icons on the bottom. Pixel 3 (failed to mentioned in first post).

Older HUs like mine only support iphone USB so you have to use BT for Android which works but uses more battery and ive had charging issues while connected using BT as well. Now, even HUs less than $200 have the ability to connect directly with USB and charge at the same time. Ill be buying another HU soon.
