So I know there are a lot of similar tutorials and links throughout this forum but I thought I would help my fellow noobs out with some vids I found very helpful.

1) TB_AUTO_ROOT [cite]this video is as easy as it comes...if it doesn't work for you then re-install the auto_root zip. Requires: TB_AUTO_ROOT and HTC Sync (htc sync doesn't need to be opened during this process).
YouTube - ‪How To: Root A HTC Thunderbolt ( Easiest Tutorial / Step by Step )‬‏
Easiest way to root however I preferred doing it myself and will be glad to go into detail if anyone needs help with ADB.

2) So know your phone should be rooted...if not continue step 1 until you have your phone rooted. Also if "Super User" isn't auto-installed after the auto_root just search in app store THEN...

3)Search "Rom Manager" <---This is where you will be finding most of your Roms starting out.

4)FLASHING Roms...I wont go into detail about what this means ...google it!
here's a good link (helped me starting out last week at least)
YouTube - ‪HTC Thunderbolt Rom Flash‬‏

This is for BAMF remix (if you want bamf or any rom just google the name or look on the forums...Gingerbread is available f.y.i) but today I have just been fooling around with B.A.M.F and T-Stick (dont get T-Stick) :)

Hope this helps all the newcomers. As a noob myself, and a new member I had some difficulty last week and these videos along with the great community here helped me out a great deal!

Thanks and happy Rooting!

I like everything here except:

Don't waste time with ROM manager. I've never used the PRO version, but with the free version the Rom lists are scant and out-of-date from my experience. Just use Rom manager to flash CWR and be done with it.

If you want to browse pretty much every ROM available, check here:
The Official Thunderbolt ROMs & Kernels Listing v2.5 (Updated 7/10 12:35 AM CST) - xda-developers

Or, for the BAMF Roms (which are probably the most popular for Thunderbolt), here is great place to find all of them:

NICE! Well said :) I apologize I have been up all night ROM'ing out so I'm a little loopy. Should have been more careful with that step :-X

K...so I think I may have screwed the pooch :) One of my radios was bunk and i cant seem to get anything to run after rooting now. I am receiving messages ranging from "error not permitted" or something to that effect, and a few others leading me to believe the maybe my super user is not granting permissions?

Also when trying to update the Su binary voutdated from S.U. I keep getting "an error occurd and su was not updated. a zip file (su_2.3.1-bin0signed zip) has been placed on your sdcard. Please reboot in recovery mode and flash it to update your su binary.....have I messed up? :-\

I have a 8 year old laptop that has no ports in the back of the computer to plug into as you suggest. I have two ports on the left side and one on the right, which should I plug my Thunderbolt into for rooting purpose? The laptop is a compaq presario R3000, nothing fancy but is in great condition. I just don't want to start the root process and stop 1/2 way thru due to using wrong port. If my computer recognizes my phone would that mean I am OK to use that port??

Any words of wisdom would be appreciated,
Vinny

The whole "back of the computer" thing is mainly directed at desktop computers. The key is to use the PRIMARY USB port on a computer, and not a secondary hub. Hard to say if any of your USB ports won't work, so you'll probably just have to plan on using "trial and error". Making sure the device is recognized is obviously the first step.

EDIT: Given the age of your computer, I'd also be a bit worried that the ports are USB 1.1 (as opposed to 2.0), which could cause problems as well.

Just checked and one of the ports is 2.0. That is the one I'll be using.
Thanks for the help,
Vinny
