I downloaded the Lollipop 5.0 update but have not installed it yet.
1.) how do I delete the file?
2.) how do I stop my phone from continuing to want to download and/or update???

HELP

Thank you and what does "rooting" the device mean?

I cleared the cache partition, but I am still getting a message that keeps popping up that says "Software update ready to install".

I responded to your PM, but for the purposes of this thread, I'll summarize it:

Rooting is the process of getting more complete control over the system--but novices need to be cautious, because if you do the wrong thing, you can seriously mess up your phone.

The only way to disable system update notifications is to root the phone and follow this procedure: How to Disable and Block OTA Update on Rooted Samsung Galaxy S5 - Androidayos.

At this point, I would recommend just going ahead with the update. Then after the update, wipe the cache partition, which can be helpful after system updates. If problems arise, then consider a full factory reset--of course, this can be a hassle, since you have to backup data first, then set everything back up after the reset. But it may be worth it.

Thank you. This will teach me that I should have researched the update more, before I downloaded the file. :( I'll know better next time.

Very simple:
1. Do a backup for your phone data
2. Restore the phone to factory default setting (that will delete all the downloaded data from your phone including that update)
3. Very important: after reboot, when you will perform the initial settings steps (like connecting the phone to a Google account) a data connection will be activated (Wifi or mobile data) and at the end of this initial process the phone will immediately start to download this update again. Turn off than very fast any data connection (the update will stop downloading and an error message will occur) and go to phone settings and deselect the autoupdate option od the OS and the wifi update option. Than go to the app manager and deactivate an app called "software update" (I don't know for sure if this app is very important to be deactivated for this purpuse because I still see it running but that's how I did)

That's all and works just fine. You will never be prompted for this update again

From my other post on this:

I discovered how to stop the installation of the new android system upgrade (to 5.0 Lillipop from KitKat) if you have downloaded it to the Samsung S4 (but not installed it yet). The best thing is to keep saying "no thanks" to the upgrade "offer" that appears on the phone from time to time. If you accidentally said "OK to the download" but changed your mind, as I did after reading reviews of Lollipop, there's a way out.

Here's what I did. As the first post said, I wanted to stop installation of a downloaded system upgrade to Lollipop. I had downloaded it thinking that I would not have to install it, in order to stop the frequent "invitations". But once downloaded, you HAVE to install it at a certain time that day. The phone required me to say when I wanted to install, so I said 1 AM.

I then immediately cleared the system cache (this is harmless to your data and personal settings) by doing this:

Turn off phone
Remove the battery and reinsert.
Hold down the Home and Volume Up keys
Press and hold the Power button while still holding the other keys.
You will see small blue writing in the upper left corner. When you see it, release all keys/buttons.
Wait for the system restore menu in yellow to appear and a little robot lying on it's back
Press on the Volume Down to scroll down to "Wipe Cache Partition."
Press the Power button to select it.
Wait for a few seconds for the phone to clear the data.
Then press the Power button to select "reboot system now." (should be preselected)
Wait for your phone to reboot.

That night (before midnight as I had told it to upgrade at 1 AM), I turned off the phone and removed the battery (This step might not be required, but it's what I did)

For my wife's phone, we had checked the box "install automatically" when we "allowed" the download of the update, and on mine, I didn't check that box.

For my wife's phone (having checked the "install automatically" box), when we turned the phone back on the next morning it came on, then turned off (trying to do the system upgrade) and then the little android robot appeared with "Error". Later on, on the home screen, a message appeared "system update unsuccessful, no changes were made." Then everything was fine.

For my phone, where I did NOT tell it to install automatically, a message box appeared saying the install was ready, option is to install now or later. I pressed "install now" and the phone turned off, then behaved as above for my wifes phone.

The update DID NOT INSTALL and the phone was just fine in every respect, BUT WITHOUT LOLLIPOP being installed against my will. I like the KitKat build, my phone is working fine, and my motto is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"

As mentioned, I had called Verizon asking what file(s) to delete to avoid the update from happening. The Verizon tech rep was nice and called Samsung only to be told there was no way to stop the upgrade once you downloaded it to the phone. Could I know more than Samsung?? But this worked for me. Perhaps they don't want us to avoid the update...

It "appears" the Lollipop download is stored in cache. So it may have been possible that I removed the update by simply clearing the cache, and if so, then you might not need to turn off the phone (or remove the battery), but someone else can experiment with not doing that step!

I assume Verizon or Samsung will try to get me to agree to upgrade again, but next time I will say "NO THANKS!"

--The other option, which I have not tried, if you did the update but hate it, would require you to have a prior backup of your phone made before the update occured. Using the KIES3 software from Samsung or other backup software (or if your backup is in the cloud), theoretically, you could do a factory reset of the phone, and then restore your phone to the last backup state BEFORE the Lollipop was installed. But this would only work if you had been making complete backups on a regular basis. This just reiterates the importance of making regular complete backups as phones are now as important as our computers.

I tried out the suggestion in the latest post, with the manual (not scheduled) option, and it doesn't conveniently fail...the S5 called my bluff, and despite wiping the cache multiple times, it is still upgrading to Lollipop. I had brought it into the shop to get it downgraded manually too. They also didn't have any solutions on getting the prompt to disappear...the unchecking of the auto-update box does not do the job, and they know about this problem. It is only now that I noticed the post said this fix was for S4...why post it to the S5 forum then?

Hey.. i've just join this site to reply you. Thanks for your help and simple solution.
I've done all backup and master reset (factory restore+Cache partition remove) my device just few minutes before, What i have done more is i did not connect to WiFi while start-up configuration, I avoid Eula Samsung feedback for progress updates and all that so i check to "No Thanks" and i did not add samsung account. After booting completely, i disable Auto system updates and uncheck all options in "settings>about phone>system updates" , then disable or turn off the System Updates app from Application manager.
But there were 2 Update applications running , one has the option to turn off but the other one is having dim/solid button , not able to turn off that 1.
and by writing this it was almost 45minutes and there is no Update option , i m using watsppp , imo , and play store. wifi is on too.
Everything Is Good till now. will Update you tomorrow or day after tomorrow. :)
and Thanks Again.

Hey i find a solution for this for all rooted devices. All you gotta do is install the titanium backup. Open it and go in the backup/restore option. Search for the software update. Their be 2 of them or maybe 1 also. First backup that, just in case. Then uninstall i and voila! your status of software update will be gone and in "about device" your software will be up to date having not updated to lollipop ;).

I did the above to remove cache and it did not remove the update that I accidentally downloaded and do not want to install.

Gotta love how NO ONE can tell us WHERE the OTA FILE is located. Instead, advice for everything else is given.

Any way that we can get an answer to the OP question???

Hello and welcome to Android Central WIDGET738!

Depending on which of the 41 Galaxy S5 models you have, the file should be in... /dev/block/mmcblk0p17 as this is the FOTA partition.

Hope that helps!

Welcome to Android Central! The download might be in the system cache partition--you can clear it this way: http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-10404.

Preventing update notifications requires rooting the device.

I then immediately cleared the system cache (this is harmless to your data and personal settings) by doing this:

Turn off phone
Remove the battery and reinsert.
Hold down the Home and Volume Up keys
Press and hold the Power button while still holding the other keys.

I also accidentally downloaded the update file, but never installed it, and suddenly I'm getting constant notifications that I'm out of storage space, and my other apps freeze because of this. I need to delete the Lollipop update file also.

I tried this method B.Diddy linked to and SamsungS4Fan typed out, to clear the system cache, but it doesn't work. When I hold the Home, Volume Up, and Power buttons, the small blue writing appears in the left upper corner, then the android robot shows up on screen with the notice that it is installing the update. I do NOT get to the robot lying on its back, or a menu to select to Wipe Cache Partition. How do I get it to stop automatically installing the update file, and take me to the Wipe Cache Partition menu?

Thanks for any help.

You have an S5 as well? Are you certain that you pressed the Vol Up button in that combination press, or the Vol Down? If you press Home/Vol Down/Power, that gets you to Download Mode, which gives you a message that it's downloading and not to disconnect (which you don't have to worry about as long as you're not connected to a computer via USB and actively downloading a firmware file).

On my Note 3 on the Phone (Connected via USB to my PC) I see the "fota" folder right in the root directory. I went in there, and Bang! There it was, UPDATE.ZIP (1 Gig in size!). That was the Lollipop Update. BUT FIRST, you need install "EZ Package Disable Pro ($1.99 from Google Pay, and NO ROOT is required for this great app). Install it first, then go way, way down the list and find "Software update - com.wssyncmldm" and check the box so its disabled. Reboot phone, then go back and delete that UPDATE.ZIP file in the fota folder. All done! No more hassles about the update and I got my space back.

I may be wrong, but doesn't the Lollipop have to be there to be able to install Marshmallow OTA? Of course if you don't want Marshmallow then it is no big deal.

Then again the Original thread was started March of last year.

i rooted my phone... i did freeze thru TB but still get a vibration/sound notification - i have root explorer, where can i find it? I did try and install EZ Disable Pro, but unable to activate... Can it be because im rooted?

I'm going in thru Root Explorer and found FotaAgent folder - this folder alone or go into and delete the one that has FotaAgent.apk?
