Help Me Convince My Mother to Get a Nexus 10 Instead of an Ipad

For those that say the iPad is easier, seriously? Both have a home button and a browser on the home page.

I've had to teach people hire to use an iPad, iPhone, Android device just the same.
My kids and wife have both iOS and Android devices. They say each has their simplicity and difficultues.

I just believe people are regurgitating stereotypes when they say one device is easier than another without really thinking about the facts.(as in no one has stated why one it's easier than the other)
I don't think iOS is easier, but since Apple products are so locked down they are harder to screw-up so I call them idiot-proof.

I think that the point made earlier about the apps has convinced me that I should get her the iPad.

Just get it for her and she'll be happy.

If she already has an iPhone, yes it will be easier for her.

For us it isn't hard but the launcher confuses people who are not as savvy.
IOS is just an app drawer this simplifies it for them.

Pretty much. It's simpler for some people if they use iOS first.

This is from me, on my EVO 3D.

that's true, for her it will take less thinking.

I can understand why you wanna get her to switch to Android, I always do that with my friends that have iPhones. But maybe if she likes it enough she won't care about you getting a tablet of your own. :P

I mean no offense by this but it sounds as though androidluvr2 needs to separate thier needs/desires from thier mother's.

Even with her at 75 I have no problem IF androidluvr2 tells their mother "If you get an iPad, I can not provide support/education/training for it, If you buy an Android I can". However to try and force their mother's choice based on their personal desire to play with a device strikes me as selfish.

I personally prefer Android over iOS, primarily because I dont care for walled gardens. My parents live far from me So I am NOT able to provide support in a timely manner. That combined with the number of their friends using iOS made iPad the right choice for them[They are Deaf so Facetime providing a visual form of communication before android makes a difference]. My wife would prefer a simpler interface for her phone, so in theroy iOS would be better, but she would also prioritize a physical keyboard over the interface so she has an Android. My son wants an iPhone [when he is old enough for a phone] because some of his Classmates already have them, this I will take a stronger stance on becuase I want him to learn to evaluate technology based on HIS needs not blindly follow his friends decisions. Oddly enough he was all set to buy a Nexus 7 with his own money until a Nintendo Rep told us the next Pokemon game would be 3DS exclusive so he decided to save for that instead. I share all this to demonstrate that blindly forcing my prefrences on thosu around me would be wrong because it doesn't take into account their needs.

androidluvr2, reevaluate things from the perspective of your motehr's needs and desires, then present her with the facts. then let her make the decision.
But your son would love the iPhone. I am not talking about your post specifically but I've seen plenty of people wanting to force upon family members that want an iOS device but getting them an android phone instead, to you guys I ask why?

But if she learns new things and keeps challenging her mind that will help prevent dementia (this is one argument I have come up with :)).

Download some iOS apps to help with that. There are plenty of brain training apps available on iOS. You don't need a completely new ecosystem to be able to accomplish that goal. Just my $.02

she won't care. I just think I want a phablet in the fall so it is hard to justify getting myself a tablet now. And I want that Asus tablet/laptop thing, too.

Well if it's your own money then that's all the justification you need.

at some point though, I have to control myself, ya know? Can't buy every new toy you see just because you can. It gets to be too wasteful when I think about how I could put more away for retirement, etc.

Because for most of us, we are the techies in our families and we are the ones that our family members turn to when they need their devices set up, they don't know how to work their devices or they have a problem. And we don't want to have to mess with apple's ecosystem because we aren't into it. For me at least it is that simple.

I'm not saying buy every little thing you can, just saying that you don't really need justification to buy it.

This is from me, on my EVO 3D.

I'm the techie in my family as well and I am invested in iOS and Android Mac and windows. I try stay open minded ya know? Not just sticking with one thing( personaly I believe no one should be forced to get something they don't want)

As I wrote before, I can't force my mom to change to android, all I can do is show her the advantages. BTW - I was one who bought her her 2 iPhones because they are idiot-proof and I knew she couldn't mess them up.

I don't want to be invested in apple products. It is a choice I made like you made a choice to learn both iOS and android.

Unlike fanboys, I don't try to actively persuade friends and family that have or want iPhones. If they want an Apple device, let them have an Apple device. Don't be that nutjob.

OMG thank you! You don't go around trying to "convert" people to Android.

Look, only us geeks see the advantages in Android the normal customer doesn't
FYI I was a HUGE Apple fanboy until I decided to try android as well, It's not that difficult to learn both. seriously.

If I'm not spending my own money on it, I don't really care what someone else has or wants.
Well let's put this in perspective. My mom lives with me so if she gets a Nexus 10 then I have a Nexus 10 in the house to play with.

Also, I am trying to persuade my sister to get an iPhone 5, she has a 4+ year old blackberry right now and is not very tech savvy herself so I thought an iPhone would be a good choice for her especially since her boyfriend and 2 kids have iPhones and they (not me) can help her with it.

I don't care what someone else has or wants as long as it doesn't affect me. Once it affects me, then I care. My mom's iPad will be something I have to set-up, teach her how to use and troubleshoot when needed. And I will probably be buying it for her along with my sister for mother's day so it will be my money, too!

I don't agree. There are lots of people who would like to WiFi tether their computers to their phones without paying extra. I can't tell you how happy I have made friends of mine by showing them how to do it.

And I have friends who aren't geeks who use gmail and google calendar and chose android for that reason.
