Help on deciding on a good device for my mom?

I have been searching continuously but it seems like every Android device I consider has a huge flaw that can't be ignored, which makes this very annoying.

She is on T-Mobile and she would like something with support (i.e. if she is having issues with it, she can call them to help her but she hasn't had to do that at all actually). For me, since I am the one buying it, the ceiling stops at $300. I want her to have a device that has Band 12 too. She currently has the Alcatel OneTouch Fierce 2, which leaves nothing to be desired LOL. Found this great list.

Basically her uses are occasional selfies, occasional pictures, using WhatsApp and watching videos that people send her on WhatsApp, texting, calling and occasional reading. So she's not a power user by any stretch but at the same time, she's not a fan of being married to her charger. 5.2" screen is her limit, and she wouldn't do any smaller than 5". It has to be a phone that I can buy new too.

My options are:

-HTC Desire 626s
-Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime
-Nexus 5x
-Sony Xperia Z3 (apparently a software update enabled Band 12)

Help? Any suggestions?

From the list, i recommend you the nexus 5x the most. A great bang for the buck. Since the new updates come out for the 5x, it keeps on getting better and better. Its now optimized very well. And im sure the 5x will last for 2+ years easily. Last but not least, the 3 years of update and software support from google.

Is there a budget? What device would you consider is way too much phone for her?

$300 is the most that I can afford to go for her. She isn't the best with technology and can possibly be easily frustrated so anything that is laid out in a way that will be a bit simpler for her is good. A reference point for her is that she keeps saving her contacts to the phone and not to her Google account, which is very annoying, but eh.

I agree, but she is someone who doesn't even want to install updates. My only concern with it is that if she had issues with it, T-Mobile can't help her, but who's to say that she would even have them?

Notes I forgot to add to the original post is:

The 626s apparently has an issue with sharpness and also a UI thing that makes you choose between home, work and out and I don't know if she would like the HTC Sense UI.
The Grand Prime seems to be decent but apparently video playback isn't that great, and she enjoys watching WhatsApp videos on her phone.
The 5x is solid, but aside from possibly being too much phone for her, T-Mobile wouldn't be able to help her if she has issues related to the phone.
The z3 isn't bad but I see it as an "egg" phone since it has glass on the back and the front. Also, I have heard something about it overheating?

I have the 5X, and I love it. This is probably your best bet in the list, considering the stipulations for purchase (please don't take that the wrong way...everyone has limits).

It's fine, I understand what you are saying. I would feel more comfortable with the 5x for her, it doesn't seem to compromise on anything. I'll have to find a way to get a launcher or some kind of setting that would display a badge/marker for her to see that she has a missed call, text or so. She doesn't always pull from the top so that's my only concern. I can see her being pleased with it for sure.

The kicker is that I just bought her a car charger and I'll have to see how she'll feel about having to change ALL of her cords.

Well, that's going to happen sooner rather than later. Samsung might be holding out, but 2016 will be the Year of USB-C... LG, HTC, Google, and probably a bunch others will convert.

May not be so bad. Especially, if you go in stages. Figure out the one that really gets used a lot, and go from there. Another thing you can do is order a USB A to USB C cable. That might limit your need for adaptors and such.
