Hello,
I need some assistance rooting my EVO. I found this sticky http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc...34-how-rooting-htc-evo-froyo-2-2-windows.html . How to root the evo but I have few questions on the steps:-
a) The steps listed here are for version 2.1 then 2.2. Are there steps just for 2.2.
b) Can I also use unrevoked which will do the same steps listed in the above sticky or no.
c) After phone is rooted, I will get custom roms but will it make the battery life little better besides giving me stock andriod with no bloatware.. .

Hi carguy, welcome to AC.

a) - the steps take you through rooting 2.2 and downgrading the phone to 2.1 and then rooting that installation

b) you can used unrevoked but no one knows how it really works and it's harder to help people if you don't know the steps they've taken to root.

c) there are a lot of rom choices, some based on htc/sprint's software and a few that are just from google, battery is more about how you use your hone but some roms have kernels designed for better battery life.

-- If your phone is new, or if you accepted the most recent OTA update - you need to see what bootloader version you have: http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc-evo-4g-roms-hacks/49717-best-method-being-rooted.html - if it's 2.02 or 2.10 at this point you're forced to use unrevoked-forever and have to follow this thread: [ROOT][GUIDE] HBoot 2.02/2.10 SOFF - On Fire Like Wood Edition - Upd. 12.20.10 - xda-developers

Hi Fred,
Thanks for your reply. Well I just installed the latest HTC OTA update . I followed the steps but got confused when they talk about 2.1 instead of 2.2.

a)Any ideas which ROM's are designed for the better battery life for EVO.
b) Other benefits of rooting besides getting better wallpaper. The reason I choose unrevoked as if I mess up on one of the steps listed in the sticky dont want to brick my phone.

It's almost impossible to brick the phone, the reason unrevoked won't work is because with the latest OTA they locked out writing to the recovery via a flash, you need to manually push the files. You have to follow this guide to root with the latest ota: [ROOT][GUIDE] HBoot 2.02/2.10 SOFF - On Fire Like Wood Edition - Upd. 12.20.10 - xda-developers - it's complicated but it will get you a custom recovery and s-off and a rom with root access installed.

You can get a RUU (rom update utility) which is a windows exe from HTC that will restore your phone to factory in the event of a total melt down.

There are a lot of benefits to rooting, free wifi tether, you can remove any apps that you don't use, you can install other roms/kernels that make your phone run differently, or faster, or are better for battery.

I also need help rooting my EVO. I did the newest OTA update I have hboot 2.10. I'm still pretty new to all of this and a little hesitant to run all of those command prompts and would like to use unrevoked instead. Would you advise against this? Should I wait for the newest unrevoked update? Thanks in advance

As of now, you can't root the latest OTA without going to the new xda thread, that uses unrevoked-forever which flashes the phone's radio to hold "s-off" - it's not like the unrevoked program that runs on your phone to gain root access, it just allows you to flash a rom with root access.

You would still need to use all the command prompts, there will be a new version of unrevoked to obtain root and then turn s-off without all the prompts I'm sure, eventually anyway, people usually have decent results but I advise taking the long way so you learn what it is you're doing and it's easier for people to help you if you get stuck.

Ok so when it says
"Type the following (this must be excuted from the folder you extracted to)

adb push root/unrevoked-forever.zip /sdcard/
adb push root/mtd-eng.img /sdcard/
adb push pc36img/PC36IMG-ENG.zip /sdcard/PC36IMG.zip
adb push pc36img/PC36IMG-MR.zip /sdcard/PC36IMG-MR.zip
adb push root/flash_image /data/local/"

in the root guide what parts of the prompts need to be changed to my path locations?

Ok, so you downloaded the folder from that thread right? so you want to have your command prompt right in that folder.

For instance, you download the zip file and place it in to c:\evoroot

Then if you're on Windows 7 view the C drive under my computer, hold down the left shift button and right click on "evoroot" and select "open command prompt here" - then you're in the right place.

For other versions of windows go to start, run, type: cmd, hit enter
then you'd type cd c:\evoroot

and you'll be in the right place to follow that guide.

When will the instructions be posted to root the 2.2 version with the latest OTA update .. . I dont want to go back from 2.2 to 2.1

Carguy, just Download Unrevoked 3.3. It works with the new OTA update, I just did mine. Let me know if you need help with that, but thats the EASIEST way of rooting hands, down, it takes no more than 4 minutes, and it does it all for you after you download the software.

if your using and following this [ROOT][GUIDE] HBoot 2.02/2.10 SOFF - 2011: A Recovery Edition - Upd. 01.02.11 - xda-developers to the T and have read the instructions prior trying to do it...you will see you will be loaded with a custom recovery the new ra 2.1.1 and will be running the latest sprint lovers rom ([ROM] 12/31/10 | SPRINT LOVERS | 2.2 | 3.70.651.1 | Radio/Wimax/PRI All-In-One - xda-developers) with the latest updates.

its pretty easy and foolproof as long as you follow to the letter.

or take the easy way out using unrevoked and your still gonna be lost and be asking questions....thats my opinion.

If you use Unrevoked, and you have questions email me or send me a PM, trust me you wont feel lost, its too easy.
