Help rooting Non-Sprint CDMA Hero 2.1

Now that the smaller CDMA Carriers have updated to 2.1 on the Hero, hopefully there will be instructions for root. I have searched on here and at XDA, but haven't found anything yet that will work. Apparently, any method for rooting a Sprint Hero will not work. Unrevoked method doesn't work either. The firmware I have is 2.1 update 1, and software version is 2.36.556.1. This version is a PCD build.

Have you tried the method described by this thread in the XDA forum:

Search the thread for your software version (2.36.556.1). There is mention of the rooting method working for that software version.

That method is for linux (Ubuntu one click method). I am looking for a windows method.

Actually, the thread starts off with a Windows based method -- starting on page 4, but people were having issues with getting the usb driver to recognize their phone (page 5). So ktemkin posted an easier method using Linux.

Unfortunately, they have not cleaned up the thread to clearly state the step-by-step instructions for Windows, but you might want to read through the thread and ask questions to get clarification.

I have the Sprint Hero, so I have not and can not try this rooting method.

Also, the thread seems to state that they are having some minor issues loading Sprint Hero based ROMs on non-Sprint based Hero - as not everything is working.

I did find another thread over at XDA that worked like a charm. Using this method keeps the small CDMA carriers out of the dark....here's the link

Ok, so I have successfully rooted NON-Sprint CDMA Hero. As far as the ROMS are concerned, some are cooked off of Sprint builds, which will not work for NON-Sprint Heros. Could someone post a list of good 2.1 ROMs that are not for a Sprint Hero?
