Hello,

I have an annoying, strange and big problem! My Galaxy S3 (SGH-T999 model) is restarting everytime, and I suspect that it is happening some problem with the power button.
I say that because, while I'm using it normally, it appears that window with "Restart, plane mode and turn off" options. And than, it restarts. What I guess it is happening is that there is some bad connection on this button. Sometimes, the screen keeps locking/unlocking, as like the power button is being pressed. But the biggest problem occurs when the button is pressed for some seconds, and the cel restarts.
What do you people recommend me to do? Should I try to open it and do something?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to Android Central! Before you think about opening the phone up or sending it to a repair shop, try the following:

1. Boot the phone into Safe Mode (Safe Mode - Samsung Galaxy S? III). If the problem doesn't occur in Safe Mode, it is likely a 3rd party app you installed that is messing things up.

2. Try doing a system cache partition wipe (http://forums.androidcentral.com/sa...ing-into-recovery-mode-galaxy-s2-s3-tab2.html). This will erase temporary system data only, not any important personal data. Just make sure you select "Wipe Cache Partition," and NOT "Wipe Data/Factory Reset."

3. Sometimes a bad battery or a bad SD card can cause boot loops. Try a different battery; if that doesn't help, try unmounting your SD card and then removing it (you can insert another card if you have one, but it isn't necessary).

i have the same problem when i boot up my phone it doesnt ask me for my pin of the sim card it goes right away too the home screen and than it reboots it self and that goes ;llike that for ever
i tried to boot it intoo safe mode but it dosnt go in too safe mode it reboots it self again this time with out going too the home screen of my phone i have a samsung galaxy S3 GT-I9305

My power switch crapped out a few weeks ago. My phone was about 2years old. It was randomly rebooting. How I figured it out was when I would take the battery out, as soon as I would put it back in the phone it would vibrate and like it wanted to start w/o me pressing the power button. I replaced the switch myself and back in business. I bought 3 switches from eBay for $6.

The little white spec on the penny is the switch.

ozie,
It could be a malfunctioning Power switch as Diesel6401 suggests, or the OS could be corrupted.

Can you boot into Recovery mode or Download mode (and have the phone remain in that mode)?

If not, it's probably time for a visit to the local carrier store. The phone is probably still under warranty, so at worst Samsung should repair it free of charge (although I'm not impressed with some of the posts I've seen about their repair practices; but it's a small data sample).

Mine would have cost $150 for TMO to replace, so I put that $150 towards a Nexus 5 and bought the $6 switches.. Definitely tiny, but doable and I have Sasquatch size hands :)

Hey Buddy,

I tried doing this, however I'm not able to login via Safe Mode at all. I tried removing the SIM and the SD Card however its still restarting. When I connect the battery to charge, the phone still keeps restarting and its really annoying. Please let me know what to do.

Ok. I posted about this a few days ago, and I actually found a solution for myself.
I was having all of those issues, and eventually, my phone wouldn't stay on AT ALL. Yes, the problem IS with the power button...and my natural inclination is to kill the problem at the source...I'll get to that later.

Safe route: try getting yourself to RECOVERY MODE. To get to recovery mode while your phone is shut off, hold down volume UP + home button + power button. You can also try volume up + power button + PLUG IN YOUR CHARGER, in case your power button doesn't function properly (which it probably won't, like in my case). If you get to recovery mode, clear the cache and everything else you can clear, then restart. Give it a shot, let me know if it works. If it works, I'll shoot myself in the head for taking desperate route and breaking my power button lol.

Ok, so here's the DESPERATE route I took before figuring out that I might be able to get to recovery mode by using the charger. I actually opened the back, took out the motherboard, and, errr, BROKE the power switch off of the motherboard with a wrench. Now when I hit my power button, nothing clicks, but it solved the problem.

Now you might be wondering, how do I turn on my phone if the power switch is broken? I was wondering the same thing for several hours until I figured out how to turn it on. You need to get to download mode. Now you might be wondering, how do I get to download mode without a power button (since download mode is volume down + home button + power button)? Well, all you have to do is, while your phone is off, use one hand to hold down the volume down button and the home button at the same time. Then, plug in your charger. That'll take you to download mode, where you can opt to cancel the download process, which will automatically restart your phone.

That should be kept as a last resort. Let me know how my advice works for you.

Thank You very very much, I had this problem today with my SGS3, it kept restarting all day long. I tried second step and third step before reading it here, and tried the first step which worked successfull 100% with me.
after I started in the safe mode, I deleted the most recent apps I've installed and restarted the device and it is now working properly.
I was going to smash it with a hammer in a video youtube explaining to people "How to fix your Galaxy S3 from keep restarting" :)

+1 to Libby4ever21

I dropped my phone which caused the phone to go to the splash screen and then restart it self. Again best way to diagnose this is to plug the batter in and if the phone vibrates or starts then you have a problem with the power button. Normally putting the battery in should not cause the phone to start. I then took the phone apart and gently pulled the power button off the board with some pliers. The phone decided to act normally when plugging the battery in and even charged. Then used Libby4ever21 trick of Volume down + Home button + Plug in phone to get it started. I will probably go with out a power button now and use this method to power on phone when needed.

Solid team work internet!

i have tried every possible option but take my phone apart to try and fix the problem . the rebooting in safe mode will not work because my phone refuses to stay on long enough to perform the commands. i have tried going to erase all data but again it wont stay on long enough... what can i do to fix my phone.. help please :-\:'(:(

THANK U!!! i had to do the desperate route but without pulling out the power switch. thank u so much for ur input.

+1 to Libby4ever21 for giving me hope! I was having similar auto-rebooting problems with my Galaxy S3, and I wasn't willing to spend any more money for a power button repair on a 3-year-old phone. So I disassembled the phone, took out the mainboard, picked up a pair of pliers, and literally CRUSHED the power button, and pulled it out from the circuits.

Put my battery back in and surely enough, the phone stopped auto-rebooting. Sadly Libby4ever21's method of turning on the phone without the power button didn't work for me, but there are always answers on Google. Found this youtube video:
youtube.com/watch?v=eo93EF7rVIw

Gave the method a couple of tries and voila! My phone was up and running again. I then went to play store to download an app called Power Menu,
so i can still restart my phone anytime i want without the power button (note that the app needs root access though)
Waiting for the day when I save up enough to get a new phone, but I'm happy with what the S3 has been able to do for me all these years. It's a good phone (if you root it) :)
