You need a data connection (phone data or wifi) for that to work.

I've had the same issue with failed "system updates" for the past few weeks. Gets about a third of the way through then the droid lays on it's back w/ red exclamation mark. Finally opened a ticket w/ Straight Talk yesterday, they said they don't support "system updates"
Since it's the carrier that's sending the updates (Straight Talk is the network operator, Verizon is the carrier), I can see their viewpoint. They have no control over updates.) Maybe walk it into a Verizon store?

Hey, I'm new here and I'm happy to find this forum.
I'm new to smart phones. I'm really not a gadget guy and I stuck with a very old Motorola flip phone through Verizon mainly because I really didn't need more than just the ability to make phone calls. My wife on the other hand wanted a phone for texting so she could keep up with her friends. Well doing the math it was pretty apparent that staying with Verizon was really NOT the way to go for the best service for the money.
After some shopping we went with StraightTalk and each got a Samsung Galaxy Centura. And I'm glad I made the move to a smart phone mainly because it combines several different devices into one portable and easy to carry device. I opted to add a 4GB micro SD card to expand the storage because I wanted to add a teaching series and things like audio books to it and not burden the limited built in storage.
Hooking the phone to my PC via the supplied USB cable I see 2 folders.
1 says SD CARD the other says USB STORAGE.
So I moved 2.3GB worth of MP3 audio over to the SD Card folder. Everything went smoothly.
I checked the phone and I notice an alert that says "LOW ON SPACE the phone storage space is getting low". I check and for the built in storage it is down to 50mb.
I check further and find NOTHING was actually written to the SD card. It all went in the built in storage.
I then thought maybe the format on the SD card is bad, so I chose to reformat and try all this again. I got the same result.
I guess if nothing else I can remove the SD card and connect it directly to the PC and write the data that but that is a real hassle because I have to remove the hard case, then the rear cover of the phone, etc.
So what is the answer here?
It really seems strange that this phone offers easily expanded storage and then won't let you get at it!

Any help please??
Thanks everyone.

Welcome to Android Central! It has to do with the confusing way Android refers to its various storage areas. The Internal Storage is regarded by the device as an internal and unremoveable "SD Card," while the external SD card that you insert is usually called "External SD card." (In your case, the external SD card might be called USB Storage, but not sure about this.) See this guide for more info about memory: http://forums.androidcentral.com/am...roid-memory-how-deal-low-memory-warnings.html

Whenever I transfer music to an external SD card, I find it goes much more smoothly if I remove the card from the phone (making sure to unmount it first in the Settings>Storage menu), insert it into the computer, and use Windows Explorer to drag and drop music files directly to the card.

Thanks for the reply.
I discover a rather back-handed way to get what I needed accomplished.
When I connect to my phone Linux reports it as USB storage. And the only contents you can see or access is the built in storage. It is easy and quick to move files to this space.
I installed a app called SD card manager that I can actually view the external SD card. Then it is a matter of copy, paste, and delete the original files on the built in storage to free up the space again.
This is a cumbersome process but it is much better than breaking down the phone and removing the card every time I need to add some files.
Thanks!

My sister and I bought galaxy centuras for each other for christmas and they were working fine until a week later and the sound completely went out on mine it wont ring or make any noise unless i plug in head phones or use a head set. I tried turning it off and on and factory resetting and neither worked and now the sound on my sisters phone has went out too. Is there any way to fix this?

Welcome to Android Central! That's unfortunate. You'll probably have to talk to Samsung about warranty repair.

Whenever my Centura wants to update i do so and the progress bar gets to about 25% and my anroid person falls over and a red triangle appears above i'm guessing signifing that the update failed. Any help?

I'm having the same problem. Has anyone answered this???

I am having trouble with my computer recognizing my Galaxy Centura. I switched from MTP to PTP, but it's still not coming up. What do I do?

I am wondering if there is a way to silence a text when coming in when I am on a call? I have music for my text ringtone and it is very annoying.

I have had my Galaxy Centura for almost 4 monthns, and a few weeks ago i got a pair of blutooth headphones, when i connected them, my external speaker stopped working, i know its not the bluetooth itself because i have a bluetooth speaker i use frequently as well, i really do not want to get a new phone, what should i do?

Welcome to Android Central! Are you saying that the external speakers no longer work, even after disconnecting the Bluetooth headphones? While the headphones are paired, the external speaker will of course shut off.

Not that I'm aware of if your texting app is set up to sound a notification sound on incoming texts.

I have music for my text ringtone and it is very annoying.

Set a less annoying text ringtone...?

I'm having similar problems. I just got a Centura, and am trying to figure out some way to connect it to an old mac running 10.4. I really just want to be able to move files from the internal memory to an external sd card that I just put in. I need to be able to:

-transfer files to and from my mac

There are many possible solutions for this. The simplest, imo, is to install a free 'cloud app' – like Dropbox or MEGA – on both the phone and the Mac. Any file(s) you chuck into that cloud on either device is then automagically available on the other one too. No proximity or (fidgeting with) cables required. You can do it from a thousand miles away.

Dropbox gives you 5GB of free storage space, works like a charm, and is tightly monitored by the NSA.
MEGA gives you 50GB of free securely encrypted storage space, works on any device's web browser and with a good free Android app, and canNOT be monitored by the NSA...

-set external card as the default install location

Many apps (most, in my experience) will not install anywhere else but in the internal SD memory. They need to in order to be able to work.
The free app 'AppMgr III' shows you which apps are installed where, and lets you move those that can be moved. It also cleans caches.

-move files from the internal to the external card

You can do that with the pre-installed app 'My Files'. Find the file you want to move and long-press it for options what to do with it.
You can also do all sorts of file management with (free) apps like ES File Explorer, Astro File Manager, or File Expert, etc.

Tell me I don't need to get a new computer for this cheap little phone.

You don't need to get a new computer for that cheap little phone...

That said you also need to realize that OSX.4 is not supported by Apple anymore. It's old! Consequently you don't receive security updates for it anymore, which means that that Mac is now structurally insecure = unfit for financial transactions and confidential processes!

I purchased the Centura in January for my son and a couple weeks ago he put the phone on the charger before going to bed and when he woke up a few hours later he tried to use the phone and it had powered off. The phone will not power back on. We have tried the power and volume down button trick and it did not work. We are open to any other suggestions that may fix this problem. We would just go purchase a new phone, but he had taken a bunch of pictures of his newborn twins and was hoping to be able to revive this one.
