I'm getting ready to root my DInc. and I'm a beginner in the non-stock world of Android. Can someone help me understand what custom ROMs will help and/or do for me and my DInc. ?

Also if you know of any good ROMs for DInc. that don't completely throw away Sense let me know!

Running custom roms gives you many different options, themes, applications and performance. Some roms are based of Sense and some are Vanilla you will have to take a look at them to really understand all the differences and benefits.

If you like Sense then you may want to try Uncommon Sense, Skyraider, Virtuous, Desire HD, and Redemption.

Where could I find these to install?

Here.

They've got some cranky posters over there...I'm getting to be one of them...who don't have much patience for those unwilling to read a thread thoroughly.

In the Desire HD thread, for example, you can't even begin to count the number of times people have asked whether they needed to wipe...not usually, but it's always a good idea...and whether the camera is fixed...he just dropped 0.7 today and no, its' not.

The Desire HD btw is the next generation Sense. The port, in my view, still isn't quite ready for prime time.

Since I prefer Sense, I'm partial to Virtuous and Skyraider ROMs. I don't have direct experience, but the AOSP ROMS...those based on the open source and usually "vanilla," seem to be a bit more problematic but offer the greatest range of customization options.

Take your time...do a nandroid backup before you flash any ROM so you can get back to what you know works if the ROM doesn't pan out for you...and enjoy the trip.

Redemption

The best I've tried so far is Redemption. It is better than stock. I have had no issues with this Rom and my battery life is much improved.

download Rom Manger from the market. Get the paid one it updates them and you can download them right from them

I've tried a few vanilla roms, tried a few sense roms, but I keep coming back to Uncommon Sense. Everyone has a different opinion as to their favorite and nobody is wrong. It's all about what works for you...

quick question - does Rom Manager do everything you need to do before flashing ROM

When i look on XDA, it appears that several installation steps are given.

I believe ROM Manager does everything, but just want to make double check before bricking my phone :)

rom manager will allow you to download a rom straight to your sd card. It will also allow you to install a rom from the sd card. Check the downloads folder for your rom. Before it reboots, it will give you a dialog box that says something to the effect of "backup current rom" and "wipe / clear cache" Make sure you CHECK BOTH BOXES and you should be good. If something happen you can restore the backup and it's like nothing happened...

ROM Manager can do everything. The question is, should you let it?

There are complaints galore in the Desire HD thread over at XDA about flashing that particular ROM using ROM Manager. IIRC, the cook pulled his ROM from that program because either the ROM or ROM manager was messing with the flash process.

I usually..unless I'm in a hurry...copy the potential ROM on my PC, copy it to my SD card, then do the wipes and flashing through recovery. Since I know where I've copied the file to, I don't have to rout through my "clockwork" folder on the SD card to see where ROM Manager deposited it.

Your mileage may vary. Tax, tags and title extra.

I hear you, the thing is, it seems to get pretty complicated when using a mac. After reading everything, I can't figure out if I need eclipse, certain programs, what the hell adb is, etc.
