Very interesting. That's an unofficial Modaco build as well right? Probably very comparable. Thanks for that heads up, I'll look at it as well.

Hah, check this out:

If you experience force closures the issue is with your dalvik-cache.
You can clear your dalvik cache from the recovery mode. Do not do a factory wipe. Choose the dalvik-cache wipe/clear.

OK. I used the RUU and wiped back to stock. Rooted, then applied this ROM.
Initially it FC'd for the google apps (which I figured it would...maps in in /data in this build). After pulling maps out, then reinstalling/rebooting all is well.

For grins, I then RUU'd back to stock and tried the unoffical Modaco 1.3. Same result. Not unexpected, as the build prop and update scripts between them are almost alike...we both built on Paul's work.

The only thing I can think of, is there is an issue with your SD card. Try flashing and remove the sd card, then reboot. Some users had the same issue with the original Modaco CDMA rom, so it's worth a shot. If that works, reinstall the card and restore your backup, and let me know. We can then see what we can do from there.

Where can I find some information about this RUU thing? Is that what brings the phone back to stock? Would this also return my SD card to the stock settings?

Does the Google Market save what apps I have downloaded and automatically download them again for me like the Palm Profile?

The RUU is just what you said. A Windows utility that restores the phone to the state it was when you bought it. http://biggz.dontexist.com:14725/RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_1.29.651.1_signed_release.exe

The market saves a list of all your paid apps indefinitely. Non paid apps are saved until you refresh the market cache, by opening and closing the market again or wiping the cache in memory.

To restore your SD card:
Back up EVERYTHING on the fat32 partition.
Boot to recovery and reformat the card*.
Copy all your files back.

*note - you'll loose any apps installed on the ext partition. this wipes your card clean.

I'm not really worried about what's on the SD card. I've only had the phone in-hand for 3 days, so not much there to lose

I played around with my iPhone a lot, and the same with my Palm Pre. With Android, does the hacking revolve around cooked ROMs, or can I have an effect by going in and modifying system files as well?

Biggest thing to remember is that its basically Linux. Apps run in their own user space, and everything is an app on top of the kernel. And since it is Linux, scripts work, and you can customize the shell to your hearts content.

A ROM is just the shell customization paired with different apps.

I'm going to use the RUU today and start from scratch. Is there an official way to remove google maps, or do I delete it manually?

Back it up (through adb or from a file browser app), delete it with an uninstaller from the market and re-install it through your file browser app. Astro is a file manager that can back up, delete and install and is pretty well recommended.

Ok. I've been using Astro, so I'll check that out. Thanks for your help. I'm trying to finish the RUU, re-root, and try flashing to Gumbo again. Just running into an error on the RUU that looks like it has been documented for "with Google" phones.

Btw, how do you feel about the one-click root apps?

One click root apps are great for the person who wants to root then flash a custom rom that he/she likes.

If you're the type who likes to tinker in the system, I think you really need to know how to root the device yourself. If you're familiar and understand what and how the rooting process works, then one click is fine.

Is there a one click root out for the Hero yet?

There is. I rooted it myself the first time, but was wanting to just do it quickly if I had to do it again. Turns out I didn't have to re-root. The RUU wouldn't take, so I used my original nandroid backup, which was a rooted stock ROM, reformatted the SD card, and then flashed your ROM. Worked like a champ. I also have added the Nexus experience patch, and I'm not having any problems with that, either.

And I got rid of that damn WaveSecure thing, lol.

Good to hear...well not the RUU part. Save that original nandroid backup, and whatever version of the recovery ROM you're using. Thats your RUU now lol.

Yeah, wavesecure kills CDMA Heros. It's freezes, and locks the HTC dialer app awake. Let me know what you think of the ROM, and any ideas you have for the final version please!

Well I still want universal search, but if it can't be done then it can't be done. I'm not quite sure why the Hero released with 1.5 when 1.6 was already out.

I'd like for the custom 2.1 to get finished with working camera and accelerometer, but I guess 1h 2010 for the official will work.

Do you know why it is that they can't just rip the support for it out of a previous ROM?

You said the apps2sd is automatic, but does that include apps that are already installed when I partition the SD card? If not, is it safe to use the move apps/dalvic cache to SD option in recovery mode?

Universal search is built against the 1.6 tree. It needs OS function that isn't in 1.5. Waiting on HTC :-(

Apps already installed will need to be uninstalled then reinstalled. The OS no longer has the directory they were installed to. Only the record of them remians so you still see the launcher icon.

The apps I had installed are still working, so I suppose that's an unexpected plus. Phone seems really snappy. The keyboard still gets on my nerves a bit, but the only other virtual keyboard I've used was the. IPhone's. Not really anything we can do about that.
