Hotspot and WiFi at the same time?

I have a Droid Turbo and I want screen cast to my Chromecast some TV recordings I have on a hard drive. My tablet struggles to keep the hard drive spinning over OTG, but my phone powers it just fine. Problem is, the Chromecast needs a WiFi network to connect to, so I turn on the hotspot on the phone. When I do that, I have to disable WiFi on the phone, so it can't see the Chromecast. I thought I could get this to work with my RAZR Maxx before, but I don't remember any more. Is there a way around this?

Turning on your hotspot is broadcasting wifi from your phone using your current data plan. Your phone turns off the wifi setting so your NOT using your homes wifi connection to "jump" wifi from the phone. Does that make sense. Your phone can become a mobile hotspot broadcasting wifi so devices can connect to it. I'm guessing your chromcast should be able to see the new wifi broadcast from your phone and connect to it. But remember, your using your own data plan to broadcast the wifi.

I have unlimited data, so no problem there. The problem I am having is that the Chromecast and my tablet can see, connect, and communicate with each other through the hotspot on my phone, but the phone cannot connect to the Chromecast because it says I have to turn WiFi on. I can cast from my tablet to the chromecast via the hotspot, but cannot cast from the phone itself, which is acting as the hotspot. Using a home WiFi is not an option as I don't have access to one.

Any update to this? I am having the same issue. I also have unlimited data, and therefore no WiFi at the house aside from my droid turbos hotspot. Just got chromecast, but can't use it because it needs WiFi on. I'm assuming we need to find a way to run hotspot and WiFi simultaneously.

You cannot run Hotspot and WiFi simultaneously. By definition, using the Hotspot basically turns your phone into a router that uses the 3G/4G connection to the internet. To cast something, you have to have your phone and chromecast on the same WiFi network, but that cannot be the pseudo WiFi network created by using the Hotspot. Just like you couldn't cast something from a regular router.

And this is not something that is unique to the Turbo. AFAIK, there is no phone out there that does what you are wanting to do.

That's funny, my old blackberry torch could relay from my wifi router to unlimited surrounding devices. This is extremely useful when your phone is the only device that has access to the router, yet all these fancy modern android phones can't do what a 5 year old blackberry can do flawlessly, not even my zenfone 2. So much for technology.

I use my S4 Mini with my Chromecast
Using nothing but my S4's mobile hotspot.
I am referring to screen mirroring.
You need to go to Chromecast app then cast screen on the options on the top left.
Then follow the instructions to turn on your Wi-Fi it Warns you that your hotspot will be disabled but proceed next press cast screen again this time your phone will have found your Chromecast and will give you the 4 digit code to cast your to press thiss then immediately switch over to mobile hotspot again.
Press cast screen again and wait for hotspot symbol at the top to indicate that another device is connected then just press OK you must wait until the Chromecast connects to your mobile hotspot again

My iPhone 6+ is jailbroken and can run on wifi and also broadcast wifi.

I want my Note 7 to do that as well.

You cannot run Hotspot and WiFi simultaneously...

I was able to do it with my old Galaxy S7 Edge.. now with a S8, can't.. need to be abe to do that...
