Hotspot local networking

I apologize if this question has been asked before; I don't really know much about how any MiFi device works.

Will the Hotspot option for the EVO allow LAN access between devices? Or is it strictly a path from a connected device to the Internet (meaning the devices can't see each other)?

Basically, would you be able to ditch your wireless router if you had this option enabled on your phone? Thanks!

Good question. Another one I would like to see answered is, can my Wii, PS3 or 360 connect to it? Can I setup my router to connect to it and light up my whole house with wifi. I tried getting that working with XDA sharing on my Touch Pro2, but could never get any of them functioning.

I don't think you can connect it to your router to get it to work that way
The paid service provides wifi up to 8 devices, including anything with a b/g 802.11 radio. It'll work with gaming systems (360 with wifi card), cell phones, pda's, laptops... whatever. The network can be password protected.

The only way I can think of it working for the whole house (on a macbook, since im more familiar with the settings), sharing the wifi to the lan and connecting the router to the lan on the computer. Its not very efficient, but can be done (done it to get internet on my ps3 where my computer had the network key saved, but not my ps3 and no one home to ask for it). Its also how I provided internet for my desktop through wifi in my room.

If it works as an AD-HOC network, it will NOT connect all of the gaming systems. Regarding using it to connect a router, it should be possible if you can get your router setup as a repeater. I could never get it to work properly using DD-WRT. I guess I was asking if someone else could confirm the way it broadcast and if they had ever succesfully got their router working as a repeater through a similar device or setup.

The mifi can be used as a mobile router for gaming. My gf's dad used it on his wii because the signal from his router is crap in his bedroom and it connected better. He is able to play guitar hero (he's addicted) on-line with other people with it.

I think what people are trying to ask here is if you can use the hotspot to access shared resources... like a wireless printer or shared folder on another computer.

Exactly; I'd like to know if you could use this feature with a Win 7 Homegroup, for example. Sorry if I didn't clarify that before.

Just like the Overdrive or other routers, it will create by default a Local Area Network for your devices, and hence, those devices will see each other and IP packets should traverse normally between devices on the same subnet. So I suspect you won't have too many issues, albeit this isn't a full blown traditional AP / switch / router for sharing Internet and LAN, so YMMV.

Yeah, it will likely create a proper LAN, but do NOT expect decent performance out of it. It will be limited by the wifi speed of the device and also CPU bottleneck during high rate of transfer.
