Does one have to prove s/he is a developer? Who sells the developers' edition? Does it come already unlocked and rooted?? Does every (or most) brand and model of smartphone have a developers ' edition for sale? And what are the advantages of a developers' edition anyway?

It's just a phone with an unlocked bootloader. No, you don't have to be a developer to buy one. Samsung sells the developer edition of the S3 on their site, so you'd probably be able to buy one there. I don't think a developer edition S4 has been announced, if it's anything like the S3 though you might have to wait awhile for it.

Thank you. Now I understand.

Can you give me a link to the SIII that can be purchased? I've searched for some time, and cannot find anything you can actually purchase on their site.... can only find microsites and promotional material.

Yup, considering the GS4 Developer edition, I am hoping for a 64GB but will take the 32GB version. I want it unlocked and rootable.
