How can I get email & text notifications on screen without unlocking phone?

I currently get an audio notification when I have a new text message or email. I'd like to be able to see the subject or first few words of the message appear on the screen without having to unlock the phone. Is there a setting to do this? A third-party app that will help? Thank you.
