Hi guys I have recently updated my HTC one m8 Google play edition to android lollipop and tried to move files to sdcard but every time I try with different file managers it fails.
I don't know why but lollipop was supposed to have this function .
Please help me if you can as I download lots and need to move them to my sdcard and can't always go on my computer .
Thank you very much .

I have tried copy paste on several different file manager but unfortunately it doesn't work, I use to do it on the sense version before converting to Google play edition with HTC make more space feature while running KitKat 4.4.4

I am trying to move files like PDF ,photos ,videos music and apk files .

You have to create the folder you're moving the files to with the file manager you're moving them with. If the file manager doesn't own the folder (or belongs to a group that owns it), it can't write anything in it. (Linux 101.)

Nope it doesn't work
I can't even create folders with any file manager.
It says : please choose the root directory of ext-sdcard to grant es permission to operate, and then it fails. This is with the es file explorer

Rooting might be needed to create the files that you want. However, have you tried plugging your device into your PC and drag and drop that way?

The AOSP is part of my signature. It just means I am running a custom ROM, one that is based off the Android Open Source Project.

Only if done wrong. Rooting is basically copying a file named su to the phone (that's the SuperSU "binary"). That's not going to make anything unstable. A program that mucks around too much to copy that file to the phone can make the phone unstable.

I know that computer is always an option and ît does work , but for me I am always doing this on the go and don't always have the computer on me .
Wasn't lollipop supposed to have this function.
Thanks guys anyway for your help , I really appreciate it.
Maybe I will have to wait .

I ran into same issue with a LG Gpad 8.3 GPE I purchased with Android 5.0 non-rooted. I am new to Android and tried several file managers and most failed including appMgr II (even though I am 2 versions past android lollipop support). The apps do create folders on the SDcard 1 I just couldn't move or create any folders with ES File Explorer, Solid Explorer. Finally found one that works - may be a workaround until these other fix it. The app is called B1 file Manager. After installation it creates a folder hierarchy /storage/sdcard1/Android/data/org.b1.android.filemanager/files. Now from B1 menu choose sandbox on sdcard and under the files portion add your own folders. Now you can move/add/copy and open files from there.
Hoping this helps until it becomes built in to prompt if we want to install on SDcard1,ETC.

I just ran into this problem with Es File Explorer, HTC One M9, Android 5, not rooted. The solution for my was to follow the instructions issued in the popup message that ES gives you.

I'm sorry I cannot remember the exact steps, but I think the gist is that, through the second interface that comes up, you just need to navigate to the root directory of your SD card so that ES knows what the root directory is.

When the dialogue/message pops up (please choose the root directory of ext-sdcard), hit the 'Select' button then follow the steps provided.

Does anyone know what the second interface that it goes to is? Just interested as it doesn't look like part of ES.

Might be slightly different for each of the various manufacturer blends unless the next dialog really is from ES... I'm not really sure what the second screen is going to either.

Anyway, here is what worked for me on a Note 3 running Lollipop (5.0), also non-rooted (at time of writing anyway) in case anyone wants the full steps.

1) In ES, Select a file on internal storage and click the copy/move options
2) In ES, browse to (any folder) on sd card. I just used the root path for this too. For me it was: /storage/extSdCard
It will likely be different for other manufacturers (I think on a LG G3 I remember it being /storage/external_SD)
3) In ES, paste the file.

At this point you will get the screenshot in the above post about selecting the root of the SD card (I guess because this has never been standardized -- personally, I blame Google for the lack of standardization here since their approach to SD was to lock it down/try to avoid it rather than embracing and encouraging it. But that's another topic for another day)

4) Click Select on the ES popup
5) It will open another window (different app ?). I gave it a minute or 2 thinking it was loading something.
6) From here, I had to click on the "options" button (3 vertical dots in the upper right), then select to Show SD.
7) On same window, I then got options in the pane on the left sd. I don't recall the exact names but it showed some new items like "Internal" and "SD". I picked the SD one.

Thanks!

That worked for me with ES File Explorer File Manager. It wasn't exactly what you said but after fooling around it created the folder I requested on the SD card's root directory. After the first folder got created, I was able to add others to the root directory. Thanks again for putting me in the right direction. This was on a Samsung Note 4.
