how can I tell for sure if my phone has a virus?

when I click on stories on facebook I get a message that my phone has a virus and I need to download some kind of app to fix it

Never click on those to install the programs they are suggesting.

I would suggest downloading a program called Malwarebytes free from the Play Store and run it see what you come up with.

It has a virus - the thing telling you that it has a virus IS a virus. Use an ad blocker to get rid of some of them.
