How Come Sony gets Oreo First... what about us loyal Samsung users?

No big deal to me as I always delay the latest "firmware" or OS or any updates for a while until I've done research to make sure it isn't going to cause more problems than it's supposed to "fix".

Same way I do things at my job when new firmware comes out for the machines I work on. Lots of times, the latest and "greatest" isn't all it's cracked up to be and can cause more issues than it's worth.

I kind of laugh inside a little when I see people whining and complaining that they haven't received the latest updates and then when they get it, it causes all kinds of problems. Been there and done that many years ago and have learned my lesson that it's better to wait and see if it's worth updating.

You're right - I serviced Medical Diagnostic Imaging Equipment for 35 years and like you, software/firmware updates sometimes took working systems and put them down and left me to answer to my angry customer!!! There were times where I'd throw them in my trunk and leave them there until someone in Headquarters threatened me, then I'd install them. By that time, usually, someone else had found the bugs and "work-arounds" and published them!!!

Sony Xperia XZ Premium now receiving Android 8.0 Oreo update

The Google phones, we all knew would get it... they always have - it's a fact of cellphone life. But Sony? What the Hell? What did Samsung do wrong this time? I think as far as Flagships go, we should have been up there at the top of the list with the Note 8/S8/S8 Plus!

Thoughts?

Samsung usually isn't super fast with updates. They have a lot of modifications to test but at the same time it doesn't seem to be huge on their "to-do" list.

I think I knew that but didn't want (refused) to admit it Almeuit! Even if they gave it to Samsung now, we probably wouldn't see it until 2018 sometime (by the time the carriers got through with their testing too)!

Samsung has always been slow to update because they have a heavily themed and designed skin that they constantly tweak and add features to.

I'm with you guys.

I much prefer to let someone else be the guinea pigs for any sort of new operating systems, updates, etc.

Working in industrial control systems for many years has made me quite wary of being a "first adopter" of anything.

There's nothing like rolling out a new firmware update to a bunch of PLCs and then finding out there are serious problems that shut down an entire factory, refinery, drinking water plant, etc., and/or cause damage to expensive equipment and dangerous situations for plant personnel or product defects that could endanger entire communities.

I like to hold off until there is a pressing need for any update, or at least until others have had plenty of time to discover most of the bugs and obscure incompatibilities between systems, etc.

Let the Sony users Beta test for us. :)

There is no Sony phone that even comes near the S8+ or Note8.

Yep, starting a little early this year.
"Where is our update, I want the new OS, I'm never buying another [insert phone model here]".

Followed by "yay the update is here, I'm downloading right now".

Then finally, "this update is horrible, this and that changed, how do I go back"?

If I could spam the heck out of this post I would cause that is how it will go. Lol.

Damned guys, I just wondered why Sony was first - that's all! I didn't mean to stir up a hornet's nest. I have to learn to put more thought (time) into my posts...

No problem, some of us are just having a little annual fun, not picking on you.

You nailed it, just like clock work. I personally wish I could block updates without the nagging update notification.

My conspiracy thinking leads me to think updates usually cause issues with phones and what's right around the corner, a new phone release. So it makes people say screw it and buy a new phone, they feel justified now. I'm sure it's my conspiracy thinking and not true, but makes you think, the updates seem to hit a month or two before the next release.

All the manufacturers most likely have access to the latest OS from Google at pretty much the same time. I have no doubt they have all had Oreo for some time. It comes down to the manufacturer putting the effort to get it out.

Last year it was LG and the V20 that came out with Nougat first... I believe even before the Pixel. I think they wanted to make it a selling point to be the first out with the latest.

You develop a phone with and have your own software like Touchwiz, S-Pen software and hardware, it takes development time. Their software on top of Android is their top priority. Whatever version of Android is under it is just a base for them.

Nougat comes out in late 2016, they'll make sure their 2017 phones will have Nougat and develop it for all their phones with touchwiz and stuff. But past has shown, you'll most likely never see a mid year .1 or any 7.x upgrade after that. You'll only see it in later year phones like the Note 8 because they've had time to make it work.

I would guess if it weren't for Apple pretty much guaranteeing updates on their devices for three years, I don't know if companies like Samsung or LG would try to provide future yearly OS updates like they do now. They'll give us 8.0 and maybe 9.0 because they have to. But we'll be waiting for it.

I've pretty much accepted that when going to Android and that's ok. But the one thing I'd hope for is that they be able to push patches to make sure whatever version we are given is periodically updated to keep it running best it can.

Lol my post definitely had nothing to do with you. Sorry if you thought that. 😜

Samsung could always you know, not heavily skin android and just give us s-pen features atop pixel style android. Then let users install the apps they want from the Samsung store. And before you mention knox, and security. BlackBerry does it without skinning their version of android.

But like the S Pen features there are so many features built into Touchwiz, that well makes it touchwiz. It's more than just apps from Samsung that make a Galaxy a Galaxy.

I could care less when I get Android O Samsung devices always pack more features than boring stock. And in some cases have features for years before they are released. I never get excited about a new letter. My only hope is it does not ruin the experience I have already. Like when Android N ruined split screen on the S7 edge. It took away the ability to resize it in landscape mode.

Yeah. Security updates>OS updates. OS updates aren't too relevant on Samsung phones. I mean some of the features Nougat brought were actually 2 year old Samsung features at the time. I still hate Google for taking away the capability for apps to auto toggle data without root. Having data on increases my standby battery drain from 0.7%/hour to 4%/hour. Toggling data is just too messy when before my data turns on and off with the screen.

Also Sony's OS is nearly bare bones almost stock. It's pretty obvious they'll finish developing the update first.
