How Come Sony gets Oreo First... what about us loyal Samsung users?

I've pretty much accepted that when going to Android and that's ok. But the one thing I'd hope for is that they be able to push patches to make sure whatever version we are given is periodically updated to keep it running best it can.

The Google phones, we all knew would get it... they always have - it's a fact of cellphone life. But Sony? What the Hell? What did Samsung do wrong this time? I think as far as Flagships go, we should have been up there at the top of the list with the Note 8/S8/S8 Plus!

Thoughts?

Samsung needs to work on the update faster.

Samsung has always been slow to update because they have a heavily themed and designed skin that they constantly tweak and add features to.

There is no Sony phone that even comes near the S8+ or Note8.

Oreo is already a stable release, pixel had it since August, Samsung tries to wait just before a new release to update software, and sometimes it takes until after a new release for older phones to be updated.

You don't know what you want do you?! You said the note8 was a good phone the other day now it's a crappy phone. Should change your name to i can't make up mind. Sell the note8 and get the iPhone as simple as that. If you on a payment plan then you should have waited for the iPhone. Yeah, iPhone is really good at updating phones..... lol. Read the forums and you know better.
If the Note 8 was having major problems I'd agree that the firmware should be updated asap. It isn't. That is: Mine is running fine. No urgent need for an update just for the sake of updating.
If you keep switching phones because of slow updates... you'll stay switching forever and end up with bad updates.

I honestly don't understand why you frequent this forum, every single post from you is slating note8 and samsung for even silly reasons even before you got the phone (if you actually have one) you were slating it based on preview video's from youtube etc....
Maybe just admit that the note 8 is to much for you and get a nokia 3310 or something, your inputs are getting quite repetitive in a negative way

I'm convinced that you share your phone with your significant other and one of you love the note 8 and the other hates it. On odd days the note8hater posts in forums but on even days the Note8uzer posts. Lol

Well said!!! It is ridiculous how people keep on bashing the Note8 for this that and the third and threaten to go back to iPhone as if we are gonna cry about it. Go back to crappy Apple because their phones are boring and overhyped. No need to announce it just go and be on your merry way. No reason to go on a Note8 forum and announce that you're going back to Apple. Just go and be done with it - no one is forcing you to keep the phone. I just don't understand some people. You have the money, go and use it!

The reason is this.

Sony phones run a UI that's very close to the base AOSP code. It's not quite like a Pixel, but it's pretty close and the only major obvious customization are the icons along with some extra apps.

Samsung phones by contrast run a heavy UX layer on top of the source Android code. It looks and feels pretty different from stock but recent versions have at least someone retained familiar elements. As a result, it will take longer to update when it comes to OS versions.

Samsung flagships usually receive their updates in the middle of Q1 of the next year after the OS is officially released by Google.

It is not that Google said no to other OEMs, Sony chose to make this a priority and thus are pushing to their phones first. Samsung is notoriously slow to update. We will be lucky if we see it by the end of 2017 and then who knows per carrier.

Sony probably started working on their update immediately and they're only updating like 3 phones for 40 total users. Samsung does not, has not and probably will not ever care about fast updates. That's not their game.

Samsung is building Oreo for their next phone. When we see a Galaxy S9 (probably February or so) it will be running the latest test version of their software with Oreo features baked in. Once it is sold the software will have been completed and production ready.

Until they get things working on the product they are building now, it's pointless to spend time worrying about an older model. Doing so is a loss of time and money. They have to build software for a new model anyway, so that's what they target. Removing any features that wouldn't work or that would be too big of a change for existing users is much easier than building it from the ground up, so it takes less time.

OTOH, Sony actively participates in writing Android code, both with Google and with other groups that build "unofficial" ROMs. They always have (T-Mobile and Sony built the theme engine that most every company, including Samsung, have incorporated) and probably always will. They probably had Oreo ready before Google did (off the record, they totally did) because they are building it as it gets written.

I have no idea what drives Sony to be so active with this stuff. But I do know it's really cool to see. I also know that Samsung and Sony are just two different companies with two different thoughts about the way they write and distribute their software. There's nothing we can do about it.
