How did THOUSANDS of pics get onto my phone?

An annoying problem here that I am hoping the masses can help me with...

I've got a rooted EVO using Synergy ROM. Lately, I've noticed that when navigating through some folders on it, there are a few thousand pics on the thing! I know I did not download any of these, and after a little thinking, I have determined that whenever I open Emails on my PC that contain attached pictures (I have a Hotmail and Gmail account), any pics that are attached for some reason automatically get downloaded to my EVO. The same thing happens if I opened the Emails on my EVO. Even if I don't actually download them to the phone, just the mere opening of the Email with pics attached sends the pictures to the phone.

I receive a couple hundred Emails a day on my PC, and having two nieces and a nephew who frequently send pics, well, my phone is becoming overwhelmed with all these pics. (I think this may be the cause of my phone becoming laggy.)

I did notice that this problem, I believe, began to occur only after Hotmail became an exchange account rather than the old POP account. IIRC, Hotmail used to be of the old method before they came into the 21st century with smartphones.

Note: I do not use the Hotmail app; rather, I access Hotmail through the EVO's stock Email process.

Any suggestions as to how I can stop pictures from being downloaded to my phone all the time?

Its probably just like your browser. It will save pics of websites that you visit. It helps load the page faster the next time you visit the site. A way to stop it, well I'm not sure if there is.

You have to turn off your open picture automatically setting. The old roms saved them too, but didn't display them in the gallery. You stumped nobody :)

It IS off. It doesn't open automatically. It asks me if I want to view it and if so, to choose the method (Astro, Gallery, Image Viewer, etc.)

The other way I've noticed that pics show up in your gallery is when you extract files in Root Explorer, etc. Any images in those folders can show up in your gallery..... I always delete folders in my /sdcard/extracted folder that I don't need anymore.

I just ran across this as well when I was running SD Maid. Root Explorer, or any other file explorer with R/W priv saves thumbnails when u view any image file. Also someone on here mentioned the sd/extracted dir and that is true as well
