I pre-ordered the GS4 and it's estimated to arrive on tuesday afternoon.

This is actually the first time for me to preorder a phone, so I have never activated a new phone myself before.

I am currently using Galaxy nexus, and I wonder how to replace it with GS4 when it arrives at my door.

Is there any specific procedures to perform in order to activate the phone beside switching a sim card?

I'm guessing you can either do it online or speak to a Verizon rep over the phone. This is my first time getting a phone on preorder and a preorder with Verizon but with sprint i bought a phone online and i was able to activate it online through my account. And other times when i bought a phone outright through ebay or Craigslist i called sprint and a rep did it for me over the phone. So I'm assuming you can do the same.

Do I make the call on the new phone?

I usually just call from my land line so that I'm not too sure about.
All they ask for is the sim card number, phone serial number and the phone magically starts working right away. :)

There will be instructions in the box. Last time I did this, I just called a number and an automated system activated the phone without needing to talk to anyone or punch anything in. You can also activate phones on My Verizon online.

The last Verizon phone (Note 2) that I received would not activate through the automated system, I had to call. :)

My last new phone from Verizon: Turn off old phone. On new phone, called *228 took option 1 and wala phone was active. The dialed *228 and took option 2 for roaming (not sure what that does, but have been told to do it in the past so I did it ). Worked like a charm.

What if you just take sd card from old phone and put it in new one?

The last couple of 4G phones my wife and I activated did not require contacting Verizon. Put in the SIM, turn it on and let it activate. My understanding is that *228 is not used. You should be able to use an existing SIM if they are compatible or use a new one that should be supplied.
