How do I change the email notification sound? The option is greyed out.

I want my emails to have a different sound than the stock "email" alert. When I open the Calendar, click on Settings, and click on Event notification settings, the Notification sound option is greyed out which means I am unable to change to a custom sound. I am assuming Verizon did this for some stupid reason. Is there a work around? I am a power user constantly getting texts and calls and voice mails and emails, so I need each event to have a specialized sound. Currently, email notifications are indistinct so I frequently miss appointments. Any advice would be appreciated. Perhaps a third party app might be the answer?
