Welcome to Android Central! Go to Settings>Sound & Notification>Default Notification Ringtone. The messaging app should use this tone if you haven't changed it within the messaging app's own settings. You can have the messaging app use a different tone than the default by opening the app, tapping Menu>Settings, and looking for the notification settings there.
