How do I factory reset my phone safely?

Tried to do a factory reset by holding all three buttons as my sone forgot his password

After holding all three buttons I got no Samsung logo but a warning "Warning!! A custom OS can cause critical problems in phone and installed applications. If you want to download a custom OS, press the volume up key. Otherwise, press the volume down key."
It is a Samsung galaxy tab 3 10.1

Welcome to Android Central! This support page says it should be Power and Volume Up: https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-9945. If you press Power and Volume Down together, it usually enters Download Mode, which is used to manually install a new ROM (which you don't want to do).
