How do I get pictures to show on my computer when I am trasnfering them from my HTC One phone?

I plugged my phone into my computer with a USB cord. Windows Live Media shows I have over 1700 photos on my phone. I only have about 200. It asks me to import them but it will not show me the photos, only blank icons, so I can not examine them to see what they are. HELP!
