How do I make weblinks in text messages open in my browser as they should.

Sorry to repost. the ability to post a question without an account is stupid because there are no notifications and I can't even respond to people.

I am on a galaxy s6. I've never noticed this before and not sure why its happening now. I got a text with a link in it. It was to an online account. I followed the link but found that i could not autofill my login credentials. Then I realised I was not in firefox. I don't know why they made it this way as it is monumentally stupid. Can you help me to fix it?
I'm just on a standard device. Fully updated. Version 7. Samsung flavour.

Somebody asked me to reset firefox app defaults and try again. I did this and it didn't change the behaviour of the messaging app. the messaging app opens the link in what appears to be an internal browser. which is useless.

Welcome to Android Central! I was the one who responded to your other post, and this is what I said: "Go to the App Manager, select Firefox, and Clear Defaults. Now try opening one of those weblinks again -- does it ask you which browser you want to open it in?"

Can you please clarify -- are you saying that after clearing the Firefox app defaults, the link in your messaging app now opens in an internal browser, which you find useless? Is that because you still can't autofill? By "internal browser," I'm assuming you mean the basic browser associated with the Messaging app, and not the full Samsung browser or Chrome. Which browser do you want the link to open in?

The ability to post a question without an account is to allow any user to try to get a quick answer, regardless of their membership in this community. If the answer they get is satisfactory, then there's no need to respond. But we always encourage people to register on the forum, because if you want to have any kind of discussion, you clearly need an account (otherwise, we'd have no idea which guest account we're talking to).

UURGHH! I just tried using your app to reply and you woildn't believe how much trouble it is! I lost my entire post so please excuse me if i come across frank.

Yes you got.the.situation right. It still opens in the stripped down browser that i cant use autofill with. I want.ir.to.open firefox. Firefox is my default browser. This whole situation is infuriating.

Are you sure? From your initial post, you cleared the defaults in Firefox, and not the Samsung Internet app.

If you haven't already, try clearing the messaging app itself. It may have the default set to whatever browser is opening. When you go back in and select the URL, it should then ask what browser you want to use. This is what I did to get mine to default to Chrome. Good luck.

I cleared all of them.
Thing is, it doesn't even attempt to assign a handler to the hyperlink and that is what is so frustrating. Its like for whatever reason the samsung developers or android developers thought to themselves " theres no way anybody would want to open a link in their web browser so we'll just do this "

I see. Well anyway, I don't use the Samsung SMS app anyway. Third thing I always download to a new phone is Textra.

Messed around with the app and I can't see an obvious setting to turn if off. However, I realized that it was similar to the internal browser in Facebook, I tapped the menu button on the upper right, then selected open in default browser.

I was wondering if it was worth finding a third-party text app. I'll try that, thanks.

Yeah i saw that menu you mentioned. Stupid thing is, in the menu is an option that says 'open in samsung internet'! I mean how insulting is that!
It does have a share button and I could use that to send the link to firefox, but it feels like too much of a compromise and too many button presses, do you know what I mean?

What happens if you go to the App Manager, select Samsung Internet, and Disable it (if it lets you)? Does the Messaging app still only give you an "Open in Samsung Internet" option in that menu? Is the other option "Open within app"?

That's really interesting! I just tried it and it won't let me!! The disable button is greyed out 🤔

Oh well. Not all preinstalled apps can be disabled -- it depends on the phone and the app.
