How do I restore a deleted photo from my phone?

I accidentally deleted a priceless picture of my son in the "photos" app. I've checked the trash folder and it's not there. It's not in the gallery either. I tried Dr fone and that wasn't able to do anything because apparently, I need to root my phone? I have a Samsung galaxy s5 through verizon. The photo didn't stay on my phone long enough to be backed up into cloud....can someone help me please?

Welcome to Android Central! Sorry to hear that. Was the photo saved to internal storage or to a microSD card? If it was on the SD card, unmount the card (in Settings>Storage), remove it, and insert it into your computer. Then use a program like DiskDigger or PhotoRec to see if you can recover the file. Those programs can also try to recover deleted files on internal storage, but it's much less likely to be successful, and as you mentioned, you typically have to root the phone.

I also have photos stored in a folder named PHOTOS. It doesn't backup the folder. How do I get the photos to backup to the cloud.?
