How do I set an e-mail sync schedule?

I have 2 e-mail accounts set-up but neither one is synching. I have selected "Auto Synch" for both. When I go into "Tools" under the title "Synch Account" it says "Master synch has been turned off" although the green on button clearly shows. How do i set the synch so i receive my e-mails immediately?

What type of mail server? IMAP, POP, Exchange? Have you tried other mail clients which are a bit more stable than the stock, like MailDroid?
