Hello. S3 or Note 3, KitKat or Lollipop.
Can you pull down the notification shade and find the Symc toggle switch. It's referred to as Master Sync but it's not labelled as that.

If you are using the stock Email app or Gmail, you can go to General - Accounts - Samsung - Sync options, and the same for the Google account and see if email is checked. Try it with Sync on and off.
