I don't buy insurance so usually keep one phone on standby in case I break something. It's usually too old to sell on ebay by the time I get another. I used to get 1 every year on annual upgrade and that's how i picked up my thunderbolt. In most cases I spent all my extra on computers and I should switch to something like guns. LOL They always go up in value and plus in Dec 2012 I might need a few.

When I was a kid we collected baseball cards and built model cars and planes.

Kids today (ages 10-30) collect cell phones, video games and text. It's a different world.

With Money, Lot's of it!!

From the left Sprint Epic, HTC TBolt, Droid Charge, HTC Evo and Bottom my BB Storm.

How? A career with a comfortable salary. And an inkling to blow that salary on gadgets.

I have 5 lines between my wife and kids and work and since I flip the bill I get the new phones and they get my hand me downs.

I could have said just what you said, lol. Same exact way here. Also, i can charge my new device to my sprint account and ill stretch the price of the new device over 2 bills. They never bother me about it. I don't care if I have a upgrade available. I don't right now but I'm still getting the evo 3d asap.

I've been with VZW for over 12 years now. Lately, after I hit 1 year mark, they pretty much without fail send me an "early upgrade" offer (which is pretty much the 2-year contract price as long as I agree to renew). To be honest though, I have a feeling that's a regular practice and that I'm not very "special" at all. Sometimes I wonder if it has anything to do with the amount of time I've had a contract with them, the fact that I've been an early adopter of some "cutting edge" devices, or if it's just something that pretty much everyone gets.

I went from LG Voyager --> BB Storm --> BB Storm 2 --> Thunderbolt, all within approx. a year of each other, all at the 2-year contract price, at the time of launch of those phones.

I'm not sure, but I also believe my company's "corporate discount" with Verizon makes me eligible for early upgrades as well.

Don't know if it means you're special or not either. I think it was pretty standard - at least it has been for me as well. I was also a VIP when they had that program. But since they are ending yearly updates, I doubt that you or I will continue to get the yearly invitations to upgrade.

He's probably including the time with the company(s) they bought out when they incorporated and opened their doors as Verizon for the first time. If I include that I've been with 'em 14 or 15 years (Was Airtouch).

Me as well. I've been with AirTouch/Verizon since '96.

I guess I just like to minimize costs. I'm on of those guys that won't buy an Xbox game until it's $30-20. A buddy and I compared our gaming budget over the course of a year. Even what I would call moderate gaming (5-10 titles a year) the difference was in the 100's. So for most of you its just want you want to spend your money on. Seems wasteful to me, but that's just my opinion.

And BTW, I do have a job. A very good job. :D

I got lucky this time. I was walking through the Chick Fil A during a mad lunch hour and found a wadded up bill that turned out to be a $100.00 bill, and then I was mailed a promo offer for phones from Verizon for $75.00 off of a phone. I put both of those fortunate events together and ended up with a Thunderbolt. I had a Droid 1 so I sold it back to Verizon for $55.00. I ended up spending about $50.00 for my new phone. I better hang onto it for a while, since I doubt I'll get that lucky again.

Good man. I appreciate frugality and forethought when it comes to finances. Im that way too. It's about priorities. Delaying gratification usually pays off big time, in my experience.

Although, I'm definitely buying a kayak soon! :)

I have 5 lines on my account and I use all the upgrades, I am the only one who uses a smartphone and I like to upgrade about every 8 months, this was unusual for me to upgrade twice in the last 2 months (TB and DC) I usually sell the old phone to help pay, my Dx I got $350 (paid $300) for and my TB I got $450 for (paid $250) so I did pretty well with selling the last 2 phones at the right time.

Ah yes, disposable income, what a nice idea. It's something you have when you're single but not so much after you're married, even less so when you have kids, and not at all when they're in college. But we do have a 4-car garage and 3 kayaks!
