How do some of you pay for all these new phones?

Have to chime in here...I agree totally. My 2010 Subaru Forester is the best vehicle I've ever owned (that list includes Honda, Jeep, Ford, and Mini Cooper). I just did the 30k maintenance (I actually was up to 36k by the time I got around to it), so add that expense to my mortgage, car payments, a two year old, etc...I can't really justify paying retail for the latest greatest devices. But I wish I could, I have my eye on the Samsung GS2.

I almost got the Forester! I love the look of those. I got a Subaru as my first new car in 2008 because my mom's Subaru lasted 260,000 miles.

Safety is super important to me too. That was the main reason I chose Subbie. They are also higher off the ground :)

My wife just finished law school and has not been able to work, still doesn't have a job. So were barely making it on my crappy income. I love phones but can hardly afford even the discounted 2yr prices. Especially after full retail taxes. This economy sucks so I just assumed you all just have tons of credit card debt.

Not at all. I have a modest job and modest bills. I live within my means. Also, it helps to prioritize things. I spend money on my car, phone, vegan food and trips. Everything else is cheap. No computer, cable, no new clothes, etc. It's not hard, you just have to be realistic with your budget, expectations and wants.

I am sorry to hear about your situation. It's unfortunate and I truly hope that things change for the better for you as soon as possible. But with all due respect, that's a bit unfair to assume that because of our spending habits on gadgets that we all "just have tons of credit card debt". Personally, I live within my means. I've got close to $100K in student loans that I am paying off, a car loan, and standard bills. But I don't go above what I can handle. In fact, I cancelled all of my credit cards over five years ago. I do not spend a dime that I do not already have at that moment.

We liked them for the exact same reasons. :) And now I use my Android device for my music in the car, finally ditched the iPod! Nothing goes better together than Subaru, music, android and the great outdoors! OK, that was cheesy. Sorry. Back to the subject...

I can totally understand people spending money on new devices often. I wish I could. Before we had our son, I used to spend money on snowbaording and mountain biking gear and trips. Those were my hobbies, and I was fine with spending money on them. If smartphones and technology like this is a hobby for someone, then I say have at it!
