How do you prevent OTA update on Thunderbolt?

Since it seems the TB OTA update is coming, how do I prevent it from automatically updating my phone? Primary reason is because this will un-root my phone and re-rooting it will wiped out everything, including configurations, not to mention it takes a long time to re-root and setup everything again.

Even Titanium Backup Pro doesn't restore everything 100%. I.e. I tried a restore for a test and the Folder application (which organizes all my apps in customized folder) got messed up.

You simply don't update. It will either pop up telling you that you have an available update. Or if you check in the update section it will tell you one is available.

-If you check on your own just out of curiosity and say it is available it will say "restart & install" at the bottom just back out.

-If it pops up telling you there is an available system update just back out or click install later. Unrooting averted.

I am new to Android OS but i do believe this is how it works.

They, sometimes, force updates to users. If CWM is installed, the install will fail (to OP). Won't harm anything.

What is CWM? Is this a ROM or a tool?

At this moment, I don't want to install a custom ROM, just the stock and maintain the root.

It's called ClockworkMod, and it's a recovery mode in Rom Manager used to boot your phone into for device administration.

I checked out this thread in Thunderbolt forum (here) about using ROM Backup Manager to flash to ClockworkMod recovery. However, reading through that thread, it seems that CWM is used to

1). Backup the ROM
2). Wipe the ROM
3). Install new ROM
4). Restore data from #1.

Is my understanding correct? When you said that "If CWM is installed, the install will fail." what exactly do you mean? If installing CWM is only for backup purposes, then how will it stop OTA?

From past experience an update gives you the option to "install" or "install later". If you choose install later then it will reset itself again in 24hrs at which time if you do not hit "install later" it will automatically get pushed. I see you have Titamium backup, if you have frozen any of the "Bloat" the pushed update will not take since those apps are required for an update to get pushed. If you do not have "bloat" apps frozen then the update will get pushed and break root.

When I got my Thunderbolt, I did have bloatware, but since then I have REMOVED most of them (following the tips in TB forum) by moving the .apk to SD Card. The ONLY bloatware that I cannot remove are below, which if I did will make my TB croak:
- FriendStream
- Verizon Backup Assistant
- Calendar
- Mobile HotSpot
- Connected Media

The thing is, those bloatware that I DID REMOVE, no longer shows up in Titanium Backup so I cannot freeze these apps. I believe I also cannot freeze the apps listed above.

Looking at the OTA announcement, 3 apps which I did NOT remove will be updated:
- Verizon Backup Assistant (cannot be frozen due to the reason above)
- SMS and Mail (cannot be frozen since I uses this)

Any other suggestion?

The fact that you removed apps will make the install fail. No need to worry, at this point. CWM accomplishes the same thing by changing the default recovery mode. The installer sees this, and fails.

I don't think you have to worry about a forced update, since you have removed stock apps.

Thanks for the info, Str0tium!

Hopefully the OTA update will see that I DELETED MOST of the stock app but STILL HAVE Verizon Backup Assistant and NOT forced an upgrade. This app (and SMS and Email) are the three stock apps that the OTA will specifically fix.

Not sure what you're wanting, here. If you want those fixes, you will need to return to stock and apply the update. Perhaps you can flash a rooted version of it (it was leaked, not too long ago).

Check xda forums: Thunderbolt Android Development - xda-developers

I mistype my previous response, but basically I don't want the new OTA ROM update, not yet.

BTW, since it's a new ROM, does that means the old method of rooting will not work until it is updated or I can use the same method as posted in the ThunderBolt forum?

It's already been rooted. Just follow the many guides on xda if and when you want to flash it. The "old method" is the only method. It was achieved through an exploit in an older ROM and using it to write the new bootloader. After that, a ROM is a ROM.

Once GB hits, though, it will be time to start all over...

Supposedly verizon is FORCING the updates thru (if rumor holds true) and rooted phones WILL NOT accept the update, thus letting them compile a "bad boy" list of rooted phones that could not process the update. The bad boys will be subjected to throttling etc.

Take it for what its worth. They are supposedly doing this to circumvent wireless tether and people who bypass the mobile hotspot.

Rumors are just that. There is no way they can say that a failed update is due to being rooted, ROM'd, or otherwise. The legal backlash would be horrific for them.

I'm sure it sends a rejection reason. But whatever, I guess only time will tell.

Times like this I wish Google will take the same approach as Apple: ROM / Firmware updates can ONLY comes from the source, which is Apple or Google only, NOT CARRIER! And definitely not FORCED FEED to the customer.
