How does Google decide when syncing which number is the primary number for a contact?

Here is my problem.

Let's say I go from a Droid Eris to a Droid Incredible or just reset my phone or flash a ROM or SOMETHING - when I login to GMail it will sync my contacts which I want it to do but what happens is it syncs and sets randomly it seems any number as the primary number. So let's say I have two numbers for my Dad and have them labeled as well - one for home and one for mobile and they get synced to my phone as such also. The problem arises is that I know that primarily I want when I select my Dad from my phonebook to call his mobile number and not his house number. Plus the whole point of syncing is that so you don't have to set everyone's primary number each time you reset your phone. So my question is really how when syncing does it KEEP the primary number the same? I don't have a primary number field in GMail so how would I do it?

Am I asking a crazy question? I think it's perfectly sane. I get particularly annoyed in my car when I use the bluetooth to call and i say call Dad and it calls his house instead of his mobile.

Anyone please help

Thanks

I believe that this is a known deficiency in Gmail contacts. Google it and you will see that a lot of people are asking the same question.

You can dial with Bluetooth?

Have you tried asking to dial a specific number? Say, "call Dad mobile"? I never use voice dialing, but does this work?

Yes I can dial with Bluetooth but not sure if it's my car that is just scanning the phonebook? I never tried to voice dial with a BT headset. I never tried the Dad mobile thing, it works on every other phone, I'll try it later GD willing.

Thanks

but stilll looking for an answer whenever it comes
