How good is the multi-tasking?

Yes it has. This morning I was looking at my Pre and tonight I am looking at my EVO.

Pro:
Screen size - Browsing is just a better experience on the EVO
Apps - Lots of apps to download
Voice & Data signal - Get a better signal in my house with my EVO. Two bars in my basement.
Multitask - Although not as fluid as the Pre, I can't complain about the EVO
Landscape Viewing - More apps can be used in Landscape mode then the Pre, including Email
Spell Suggest - Very nice, especially when sending a text.

Cons:
Clunky App download - I have had trouble with about 1 out of every 4 apps I have downloaded. Downloading again solves issue.
Screen shutoff - Using Sprint Nav and screen turned off after 3 minutes. Granted I have not set any preferences yet.
Facebook Notifications - I miss the Facebook notifications that the Pre had.
Gmail & Email - Separate apps. Boo.
Wifi (Maybe) - Although the wifi indicator shows one bar, I have no problem with connecting or speed issues.

Sort of a half a** list, but there it is regardless.

I'm using Screen Mode Widget Lite to help with the screen turning off during navigation. Also let's you disable the lock screen! :)

As a current EVO and Pre user, I can tell you that the Android multitasking is passable. It's certainly not as good as that on WebOS, but it's not awful either.

The one aspect of multitasking that really sucks on Android is web surfing. In the default browser, you can open multiple windows but it's cumbersome to move between windows.

A third party browser called Dolphin HD minimizes the problem by offering tabbed browsing. It's still not as good as having multiple web pages open on different cards, but it is a workable solution. Without it, web surfing on Android would be a hassle.

I am getting facebook notifications... Did you turn that option on? It is in the facebook settings.

I have a release day pre as well.. and its just starting to freeze up and become mega slow more and more. i'm getting tired of it and this phone just seems worlds better.

I still miss my Pre and Web OS but as you mention, the phone was just acting up too much. I thought about trying to root it and make it faster (overclock?), but just decided to go on and give the Evo a shot. Trust me, I still miss using the Web OS, but so far the Evo is much faster and as has already been said the multitasking process on here is not too bad. You just can't see everything open at once like if you minimize all the little cards.

"One thing I didn't see anybody mention, is if you hold down the menu button, you get your 6 most recent apps, which if you're multitasking means you can jump back and forth between email and nav in two buttons, which is one less movement than on the pre (swipe up/button, swipe left or right, click on app) vs. (hold menu, click on app).
"
Thats a great tip thanks,
