How has ART been on your Nexus 5?

Re: How has ART been on your N5?

I also switched to ART right away. It made the general UI noticeably faster, and it seemed to mildly improve battery life, but the latter is notoriously hard to standardize. I've had no crashes I would attribute to ART, and no apps that would not work.

Re: How has ART been on your N5?

What I noticed most is that my standby time has increased.

I can't say if mine increased after switching since I did it right away, but the stand by time is amazing. I unplugged my phone yesterday at 6 AM and really didn't use it at all during the day. At 8 PM I did a bit of web surfing and the battery was at 95% yet.

I want to try ART, but not until Xposed becomes compatible with it :)

Re: How has ART been on your N5?

I haven't noticed anything. I am experiencing one issue since making the switch. When I reboot my phone it takes a while for the power button to become active. If I press the power button it will not enter stand by for about a minute or so

That's the first I've heard of that issue. Are you rooted? Is there some other app installed that is able to modify the function of the hard buttons?

Re: How has ART been on your N5?

I just tried art today after seeing a lot of threads about it. To be honest I have not seen any visible difference in performance. The device was performing flawlessly anyways and the speed improvement for me was not very apparent.

I am still testing battery life. I'll update the post later!

Have you tried switching back to Dalvik to see if the problem goes away?

Re: How has ART been on your N5?

Weird. Oh well, maybe try ART again after the next system update or something.

Re: How has ART been on your N5?

Agree. I only experienced small crashes, once or twice, but the battery has increased quite a bit.

I have seen several postings saying that switching to ART saves battery; some saying very significant, others minimal, and a few saying none. If it does improve battery life: What is the theory behind that? That the code ART is running is more efficient so it uses less CPU? That it has better CPU/GPU managing functions that leads to power savings?

Also curious if switching to ART will automatically clear the cache partition or if it just rebuilds each app as it needs to (encounters it/loads it). When you switch from one to the other, did you clear all your program cache?

Re: How has ART been on your N5?

It cleared the whole cache and rebuilt it. I'm used to that as my old Vivid did that on every reboot (by design - don't ask me ask HTC lol).

No issues on the N5. Zen Pinball doesn't work with ART, and Real Racing 3 is flaky at best. I have both on my N7 which I had switched to ART as well. I switched back because of those issues. Still running it on the 5 though.

Re: How has ART been on your N5?

ART has been great on my N5. I haven't had any crash issues and my battery life has greatly increased, although I haven't been using the phone as intensely as I usually do in the past few days. With light to moderate use I've gone two days on one charge. I have noticed the performance boost once you get your regular apps running though. It was perfectly snappy with Dalvik but it absolutely flies on ART.

Re: How has ART been on your N5?

No issues at all. All the apps I used with dalvik work with ART. Stock not rooted.

What the heck, I decided to give it a try. Sure enough, it reboots and then "optimizes" every app, which takes a loooooooooooooooooooooong time. I assume that is when it is recompiling the runtime code cache for every app.

I also noticed that ART is not available in developer options on the Nexus 10 nor on the Nexus 7.1 (is it on the 7.2?)

At this point ART is only available on Qualcomm? Snapdragon™ processors. ART works on the 2013 version of Nexus 7 with a Snapdragon S4 Pro (some say 600) processor but it is not available on my 2012 version of the Nexus 7 with the Tegra 3 processor. Same is true of you Nexus 10 with a Cortex-A15 processor.

This is a video of ART running on a 2013 Nexus 7.

I've had it running for some time on my Nexus 7 (months) and about 24 hours on my N5. Zero problems so far. All my apps appear to be fully compatible and battery life seems fine.
