how long has your battery lasted F-E

I had pretty bad battery life until I hard reset the phone. It's pretty impressive now....

I got my Epic on Sunday night, battery was basically dead so I didn't get to use it much.

Monday it spent most of the day on the charger on and off since I was loading everything back on my phone and playing around with it so I really couldn't test it too much battery wise however I had the phone set up to use minimal juice and anything that would synch with something was set to never or manual.

Tuesday I took the phone off the charger at 8AM and it was at 24% remaining by 2PM and I didn't even use the thing except to send about 10 text messages. I checked what the battery was using up and it showed me without signal 67% so I took the phone to the Sprint store to have them look at it because the phone shouldn't be without signal where I use it since I'm in a strong area and never had a problem before with my other phones. Well, Sprint couldn't find a thing wrong with it so on a whim I did a hard reset on the phone when I got home and I also tried the airplane mode toggle band-aid and by some miracle the battery life is a drastic change for the better.

I still toggle airplane mode whenever I reboot the phone just to be safe but my phone is like a whole new and different phone after the hard reset and airplane mode toggle and I'm getting awesome battery life :) Now I think I love this phone where I was having second thoughts before about returning it.

By hard reset, you mean including deleting all your apps?

Mine got good battery life the first day, but then I started to get bad after I started plahing with it.

Correct, I went to settings --> Privacy --> Factory Data Reset and wiped out everything and started from scratch and then whenever I reboot the phone I make sure to toggle airplane mode on and off really quick after the reboot and all has seemed to be well in the universe.

I don't know if the hard reset was necessary but it definitely didn't hurt anything. I guess that's the old Windows Mobile user inside of me since I always did a hard reset whenever the phone was acting funky and I couldn't figure out why, not sure if that's needed in Android but I know it doesn't hurt.

Now that the Epic is getting decent battery life I feel like I can actually enjoy the phone now and I'm definitely doing a lot of enjoying :)

just wondering if there is a widget or app that i can use to turn off the 3g mobile network on the epic. i know that there is a way to do it on the evo. it save battery big time on the evo and just wanted to know if there was a way to do that on the epic. my wifes epic battery wont even last a day and was thinking that this might help since she isnt using the data all day long. thanks for your help.

Without a charge on an average day I get 9-5 and my gym and then I'm getting yelled at about charging. So maybe 9.5 hours. If I use my phone a lot I will get a lot less.

Install "Quick Settings" and look for "Mobile Data".
Turns 3g off and on great!

I just wanted to add my experience with the Epic regarding battery life. I've had mine since launch day and have had terrible battery life, got maybe 8 hours/day with very light usage. My daily use consisted of 5 mins of phone calls, about 5 text messages, 10 mins web surfing, and the phone syncing with my hosted Exchange server. I also noticed the phone would drop about 10% per hour just sitting there with 2-4 bars of signal. Anyways, upon reading this thread, I noticed the suggestion of simply performing a hard reset and figured that wouldn't help much, I hadn't installed many apps with the exception of Touchdown and a few small other ones as I know from my many years of experience with Windows Mobile just how unstable smartphones can get if you aren't careful about what you install on them. I had reserved an Evo and was ready to pick it up tomorrow but really wanting to keep my Epic, I figured I'd give the hard reset a try. So I did that, reinstalled all my apps and settings and so far, battery life has been absolutely awesome! I can't explain it but as previously mentioned, where battery life would drop 10% per hour from just sitting there, I've lost only 1% worth of battery power over the past 4 hours since performing the hard reset and reinstalling all my apps and settings. I'm obviously going to keep monitoring things and I'll report back if things change, but so far, I am highly encouraged about this renewed battery life. So if anyone is having issues making it through the day with your battery, as much as a pain as it is to reinstall all your apps and settings, I would definitely recommend the hard reset route. I don't know why it made a difference in my case (especially since I had so very few apps installed and there wasn't much to wipe) but it did so give the hard reset a shot if you haven't already.

UPDATE: In addition, I've also noticed the phone now charges significantly faster, presumably because the battery isn't being simultaneously drained anywhere near as fast as it was before I did the hard reset.

Have not done a "hard reset" however I did start toggling the airplane mode every morning or when turning on phone and that has helped a great deal. I also installed the app "dcs" which allows me to turn off data during the day while at work. I just need texts and phone calls to come through so that is no big deal. Battery life has improved a lot but still not what I was hoping for. Maybe I'll do a hard reset and use appbrain to back up all apps and settings.

thank god for this site!

Hard reset

Before reading through this post I was also having pretty terrible battery life and was considering exchanging my phone for another, but I decided to try a hard reset and that has improved my battery life a great deal. So, it might be a good thing to try for those having problems.

I love how people talk about their phone use and say things like "heavy usage", "moderate use", etc....why such subjective terms?

My phone hardly gets through half the day. My time without signal is down to under 15% now that I toggle airplane mode every morning, but still, it's that screen. Every time I turn the screen on, I lose percentage points right away. Yes, I have it turned down as low as it can go!!!

Anyway, curious as to what people are getting on their phones under the "DISPLAY" usage setting.

Battery Use Details:
Display:
54%
Time on: 42minutes
Currently at 41% of battery life left!

Really? 42minutes of the screen on over the last few hours and I'm under HALF of battery left?!!

PLEASE POST YOUR RESULTS FROM THIS SCREEN!

Mine has been lasting *better* than it was, but when I want to actually *use* the phone, the battery does get used noticably. Right now, with minor usage I'm going ~17hrs... Minor usage being replying to a dozen e-mails and texts throughout the day, maybe making a move or two in chess. I'm gonna try a hard reset, though I'm not holding my breath for anything drastic.

im in the process of doing that now

but what is bump charging

I've seen lots of different answers from lots of different people (and places) for answers as to what exactly bump charging is... the answer I've seen most often is:

1. Charge your phone overnight so that in the morning it is full...
2. Remove from charger and turn off the phone (power off)
3. While phone is powered off, plug it back into charger
4. Allow it to charge and give you the "I'm full" message while it's powered off, and there you have it, you've bump charged...

I haven't tried myself but the process apparently gets good reviews from those who have tried it out...

If there are other "bump charging" definitions / processes, please, feel free to share!

Finally getting 6 - 9 hours out of this sucker.
1. dcswitch is great - turns off 3g/4g radio so no internet sucking up battery - or searching for it. Battery can last all day this way!
2. airplane mode toggle helps too, do that once a day.
3. second battery from ebay has been great. after a long day at the office i need the second battery for the gym/pandora which eats up a ton of battery.

I can get about 3 hours of "display time" out of my phone. Would love to know what everyone else gets out of their "display time".

I am getting better battery life now compared to when I first got the phone. It easily lasts me a day with moderate usage with plenty to spare. I have juice defender, which has helped some. I also have my brightness settings at the lowest level. And I did a hard reset on the phone. Not sure if it's helped any, though, but I am pretty satisfied with the battery life. Sure beats the hell out of the Pre with stock battery.

By the way, I hear rooting your phone and certain mods can extend the batter life even further. Is this true? If so, how long does it last and with what type of usage? I'd root the phone if if battery life improves much more (like two days with moderate usage).

I've had the battery die in as few as 3 hours (due to android.idq grinding away at the cpu constantly) and I've had it last as long as 20 hours with moderate use (checking txts/emails as they come in, otherwise locked).

ok i'm not getting much help on my postings and thought i would try here -
battery life is so-so. half day and i'm out of juice.

i want to try the factory reset route, but how can i save all of my sms messages, bookmarks, etc to SD? (unless it's already on there?)

Will i need to take the phone to the sprint store and have it re-programmed or will the phone number still be in the phone?

this is my 2nd epic and i'd like to try some things on my own first before dealing with an ignorant manager at a local sprint store.

Thanks!
B
