How often do you upgrade your phone?

Oh, to add to my previous comment, I'll also upgrade if my phone breaks or has issues... Like right now! Lol. Although this still coincides with my "once a year" trend. Hopefully the phone I'm getting will actually last two years, because now that I am trying to adult, I feel like my funds need to go towards more important things... ;).

Unless I have to get a new phone, I normally replace every twelve months when my contract is up. I normally pick up a Moto G alongside my main handset though, I sometimes have to work on site and I don't like taking my main phone with me.

I used to do about 2 years, unless I found a deal on new.

I went from the Motorola E815 to the RAZR V3c rather quickly since there was a loophole where prepaid could be used on postpaid and it was cheap way to go to RAZR.

2 years on the original DROID. 2 years on the DROID Bionic. 2 years on the first gen Moto X.

But then only 11 months on the third gen Moto X Pure Edition, which got replaced by the Moto Z Force Droid as the daily driver.

I buy new phones the same way I buy computers. My replacment schedule depends on computing needs. I stick with companies that provide good long term support for OS upgrades and security patches. When that stops I usually root and run a custom rom for a bit. At that point I usually end up upgrading within six months. I always buy outright and preferrably unlocked. Which thankfully is becoming easier these days. Multiple carrier compatibility is also a factor. Having to buy a new phone if you switch carriers is insane to me. In my early adpotion of smartphones I bounced around between the different OSs. I seem to have landed in the Android camp for the long haul. I do not understand complaints about rising phone prices. There has never been such a thing as a free phone. Before you argue with me read your cell phone contract first in detail then compare your pricing plan to what is available today. Trade in deals can be great. Selling your old phone on the open market is usually better. Anyways that is how I do it. Great post.

It is interesting reading this thread. It would seem that most of the posters are "users" rather than "enthusiasts". In the 6 years and 4 months since my first Android phone I have had 21 phones (1 Symbian, 4 Windows, the rest good old Android). I also usually have 2 devices at one time (sometimes more sometimes less). And yes, I carry two around with me at the same time. Currently I have an Honor 8 (for 1 week) and a GS7E (for 4 months). I suppose I am more interested in the devices rather than using the devices, if you see what I mean.

There are a lot of different devices that comes through my family's house so I've played with quite a few over the years. I normally keep my personal device for 3 years and then upgrade. But I've got a couple extra ones lying around that i use now and then for various things. These are previous devices from family members. Some have better cameras, others have better graphics for games or bigger screen for watching videos. :)

I tend to have the opinion of, "if it still does what i need it to do, then ill keep it". I normally only replace a phone because of its battery becoming terrible.

As a rule every 2 years unless something really takes my fancy. I don't even upgrade because of technological advancements most of the time, usually it's just because I'm bored :D

I replace every year, keeping the superseded one as backup. The previous superseded one I give to some person who can't afford a premium device. Galaxy S2 till my current S7, now waiting for the S8. The S6 will then go to a good cause...

Enough that I can't really use the word upgrade. I'd like to call it a lateral move. Lol. And the answer is, quite regularly.

Mobile device junkie here.
Six months before moving to a new daily driver for me.

I'll need to slow down for now.
Hoping the Mate 9 will be it for the rest of the year.

3-4 times a year.... But in 2016 I went from LG V10 to Blackberry Priv, then to Note 5, then to Note 7, then to S7 Edge, then back to Note 7 then to LG V20 then back S7 Edge and now I have the Mate 9 (which I love) and I just pre-ordered the S8+.

I am getting a new phone if my prev one is broken or has poor buttery.
Usually it is ones in 2-3 years.

I upgrade a little over once a year - maybe every 14 or so months on average. What will prompt me to update faster - other than my cell phone addiction! - are things like a falling battery, freezing, and lag.

I tend to use things til they stop working just like my ex-wife...the last phone I had was a Galaxy S5 and it stopped charging ran out of storage space and drained the battery and the charging cable was falling apart..lol

I upgraded my first phone when Cricket started using the AT&T network because of compatibility issues to a Moto E. I got a Moto Z when the Moto E wouldn't read Micro SD cards. I guess I only change when I have to.
