How to best bring up navigation without hitting keyboard

I keep having an issue where where I'm trying to get to the navigation keys on the bottom of the phone by swiping upwards when the keyboard is in view.

When I do that it always selects one or two characters from the keyboard so I end up with a partial search or text message.

It's not a big deal but a bit of an inconvenience so I'm wondering if anyone has any hints on how to avoid doing this. I try to swipe from as far down on the screen as I can but it still happens.

Is there any space on either side that you could use to swipe up without swiping over a few keys?

Yes, that can be annoying.

Once you get the navigation bar shown, on the left should be a toggle button to anchor the nav bar in place so that it is always shown.
