How to disable maps navigation overlay?

When I start navigation in google maps and then I go to the home screen or another app, an overlay appears that I can get rid of, but I have to get rid of it every time. I want to turn this overlay off for good, but I can't find a setting for it.

I can't figure out how to upload a photo, so here is a screenshot of this overlay from photobucket:

Welcome to the forums. I will post that screenshot for you to make things easier. By the way, what device do you have?
