[How To] [Discussion] Improve Battery Life

I turn off phone and charge overnight. Sounds like your "bad timing" statement is correct since I charge this way most of the time.

Thanks

With my OCD I used to sit there and watch the phone in the morning to unplug it right when it hits 100% Now I just unplug it when I'm ready to leave for work realizing that maximum 5% difference isn't going to matter that much. :p

Finally, someone just like me! :P

LOL :)

I think I am missing something. When I type "su" in the emulator I just get "su: not found". I'm not rooted and running the stock froyo upgrade. Thanks

Gotcha, thanks. Thought I read something earlier about being able to do this without being rooted.

You did, it was a typo in a post from another thread. It's been resolved and the fact is you must be rooted. Glad you got it taken care of tho. Sorry for the confusion, happens sometimes

Network Data Questions

I'm having real battery drain with Network Data turned on & looking for any ideas or solutions.

I'm running immuts -100 on the debloat ROM with stock ED01 radio.

I've always thought it was the poor phone reception that was draining my battery, but after a trip to Canada where I turned off Network Data to avoid the roaming charges - I suddenly was getting ~40 hrs on my battery.

I've tried turning of auto sync'ing and background sync - changed almost everything to manually sync.

I've downloaded TraficStats Lite to see what is using the data. With all the auto sync turned off, I'm getting very little traffic, but there are system requests, amazon appstore, and some others.

It seems that even if I'm not downloading anything (or very little) - just keeping the connection on is draining the battery.

I also get ~40 hr range when I'm in airplane mode with WiFi on - with K9 Mail, Trillian, and all auto sync on. So - I'm actually getting better bat life with WiFi than Network Data.

So, I'm pretty sure its the Network Data connection (whether active or not) that is the biggest drain.

My K9 Mail is IMAP and set to no polling - but use push.

I use Beautiful Widget (2 actually) but set to sync 1/day.

I read the post about disabling Data Roaming, and will try that. Question is.... I live in an area that isn't covered by VZW towers, and we connect using an affiliate tower for phone and data. We don't pay any extra for those towers, so I don't know if those are data roaming or not. Any VZW tower we get 3G, on the other towers we're on 1X. So, will turning off data roaming disable my network data in those areas?

Sorry for all the questions in one post.

I would imagine if your phone is considered roaming off those towers, you would lose network data. If in the agreement verizon has with the affiliate tower owners allows you to use those towers as primary towers, then no, turning it off will not disable network data. And it's not the actual network data that is draining your battery. Just like no cell reception what is draining the battery is no data connection and your phone constantly looking for a signal. If you battery is draining at home, those affiliate towers may not be providing a good signal to your phone.

Thanks LS - I have the same issue in solid phone network signal areas and 3G. I'm in Salt Lake City, UT right now with good VZW coverage and same issue.

That's the confusing part. I'm not sure if it's my phone, ROM, kernel, or just the way things are. But, when I see others getting longer battery hours and still have background sync on - I'm hoping I can find a solution.

Would another ROM or kernel make a difference? i.e. ComRom or Evil Fascination v3.6, etc.

There are so many variables that affect battery life it's hard to say. Both of those ROMs should provide better results because the Debloated/Deodexed ROM is not fully debloated and not as cleaned up as the other two.

When I enter bstats I'm told that the file doesn't exists. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Also, I rooted my device when I was at a low charge. Should I go through the steps again while at ful charge? Sorry...I'm a newbie so please be kind. Thanks!

Thanks - I may give them a try too... what about the radio? I'm using the stock ED01 radio (I went back and went through the process to get it). Would the EC01 radio be better? I've read they are really both the same - but I just was wondering if the radio is the issue here.

I don't think you will notice much difference between the EC01 and ED01 radios. And kernel affects battery life more than the radio.

Are you running Community ROM or Evil Fascination or MIUIWiz? If you aren't running one of those three ROMs, you don't have the bstats file. There is a way to find it and load it onto your phone without running one of those ROMs. Let me know if that's what you want to do and I'll direct you where to get it.

Yesterday I did the drain, charge to 100%, and bstats procedure. I turned it off last night, turned it on about 7am this morning and have used it moderately since. The display is set to 17% and the other settings should be found below. Any thoughts on why it's draining so quickly? If I wait a few days after the bstats procedure will it gradually increase? Is using Wi-Fi at home draining it? The phone is set for when screen is off, Wi-Fi is off. Any help would be appreciated.

It usually takes a few charge cycles after wiping bstats to notice any difference.

Got a few questions if anyone can help me.

1. If you flash a new rom or kernel when after following the process to fully charge, is there a need to wipe batt stats?

2. Is there a way to check if your battery is calibrated? I was thinking you could charge to 100 % while on, then turn off and see how long it takes to get to 100% while off

Wish there was a way to check to see if calibrated...good idea there. Make an APP
