[How To] [Discussion] Improve Battery Life

Is it better/worse to charge the phone anytime it is convenient or is it better to let it get to the 15% range? I did the calibration procedure and am in the first few days of the waiting stage to see how it did. Should I charge it at any level or wait until it's low?

Feel free to throw it on a charge whenever you want. In my research on the battery topic, I read in several articles our batteries work best and will have the most prolonged life if kept at least at a 40% charge.

That's interesting, because I've always heard to let them almost run out before charging. Learn something new every day...

I just Googled "lithium ion battery charging" and found some info. Apparently with Li-Ion batteries you do not want to let them run to very low levels. Battery University has an article that explains the technical info (which was beyond my level, really). Other articles I found supported the idea of keeping them charged, although keeping them charged at high levels wasn't necessarily important.

What I read was that Nickel Cadmium batteries have a "memory" and should be allowed to drain to low levels but that is not the case for Lithium Ion ones.

Thought that this was worth mentioning...17 hours 5minutes and I am at 68 percent battery left.. that's the best I've ever seen. Heres what Im running and things Im doing different.

Rom : UKB 2.1
Kernel: comavolt
Radio: DL09 (recently switched back from ec09)

Cleared bstats about 10 days ago, now manually disabling mobile data while not using the device (obviously the biggest contributor to the good battery life, imo) .

Thought living without mobile data was impossible, but I'm finding quite the contrary. Quite do-able for my uses, as the battery benefits far outweigh the lack of getting emails likes text messages.

I was contemplating on switching back to DL09 for better battery life but EC09 gives me better signal which I needed badly in my are with hardly any coverage. I will always stick with comavolt just better experiences than PB&J and OTB.

+1 to comavolt and for some reason, DL09 is the best radio, signal strength and battery wise in my area..and I've tried them all.

Try to toggle your mobile data on and off when you don't need itand see if that helps.

After reading this I want to change to Lttlwing's setup but instead I have to make dinner. :-)

A few days ago I returned the phone to stock, ran the OTA updates, and installed the basic debing/debloat ROM. Thought I'd see how battery life, speed, signal strength, and the overall experience was. So far it's fine but honestly I can't tell a difference between the other ROMs I've tried. When I get the chance I think I'll return to UKB 2.1, Comavolt, and the DL09 radio and see if, after running the basic ROM for a while, I can tell a difference while really paying attention.

I live in the DC suburbs and so far I get a good Verizon signal here. Last week I was in northern Wisconsin and, although it was sporadic, I was the only one to get a signal among the other carriers represented there. So while many may dislike the big V, it works well for me.

Thanks for the update, littlewing. I remember you giving me some advice by PM.

I will chime in from my experience now, UKB = 2 times the battery life of stock Froyo!

Just wanted to add, I use JuiceDefender (Ultimate) and it accomplishes the same task of turning 3G on/off without the hassle of doing it manually. This gives me an additional 50% increase in battery life.

Basically, I can always get through the day now, from wake to sleep, on one charge. This never was possible on the stock setup.

My UKB 2.0 with PBJ -50 crashed last night (entered FC loops) after 1 month installed, so I just finished fresh install of UKB 2.1 with ComaVolt on ED04. I hope this will be more stable. Or at least tie me over to UGB goodness.

Your exactly right about Juice defender. It achieves the same thing with turning your data on and off. However, since mobile data is on the status bar dropdown, it's easy enough to turn it on and off when I want to use it, without keeping an application running in the background. : )

I wouldn't mind extending my battery life by turning data off except when I want it "on demand" but I also like to receive my email and text messages in a timely manner (I'm a bit obsessive). Is there a way to have a profile wherein data is off when the screen is off, on when the screen is on, AND can turn on to periodically check for new messages? Currently I have my email set to check every five minutes (I said I was obsessive) so I don't know if that would have any practical implications, but is there a way to set the phone to turn on mobile data when updates are requested automatically? I could set my email to check a little less frequently if I could have data off to save battery but have it turn on every 15 minutes or so when the phone is doing its automatic check for email.

I guess this is mostly an issue when I'm away from home - and my computer - since at home I can just check my messages whenever I want.

Thoughts?

Yes. I believe the answer to what you're looking for is JuiceDefender (sometimes referred to as JD). You can try the free version, and may choose to pay the $5 to upgrade to 'ultimate' for additional features.

You can do all the things you said, plus have it turn on data every 15 min to allow background data like checking email for you.

I also have JD turn off 3g data for some apps like games or books when I don't need data.

+1 swenpro. In addition, sms messages will come through with data off, just not mms.

Checking email every 5 minutes will obliterate your battery... how long can you go before a recharge?
