How to exit out of an app and go to the home screen on Moto X

I'm using my sisters old Moto X first gen and I'm setting it up, I used to have a Moto G. I decided to open up Pokemon Go but after I was playing I wanted to view my home screen. However the only buttons that show when I swipe up is the side triangle 'back' button. On my Moto G, I had a circle(to go to home screen) and a square(to see all apps). I've tried pressing the areas where they were with nothing happening. I was able to shut down the phone but I don't want to have to restart the phone every time I need to open a new app.

Welcome to Android Central! You should either have a circle or home icon at the bottom. It'll be the center button. If you don't then that leads to to believe there is an issue or a third-party launcher of some sort installed. If there is no launcher then try clearing the cache and see if that fixes your problem. Let us know.
