[How to] Factory Restore (or Fix a Bricked Phone)

Another noobish question... What's the difference between "Restore to Froyo DK28" and "Flash Froyo DK28 Modem Only?" I'm sure the one to use is the first one if starting from stock elcair and planing to upgrade file system and ROM. thanks!

The former is the whole OS package, and the latter is just the file that controls your radio (cell signal). Modem-only flashes are for people who incorrectly upgraded to Froyo - install the former if you want to properly upgrade from Eclair to Froyo.

Wow that was a quick reply. Thanks ragnarokx. I really appreciate all your work here.

Troubleshooting
If you're having problems getting Odin to recognize your phone, try uninstalling the Samsung drivers you downloaded from the link above, and download and install this driver (select "Software" at the bottom; it should say "Device(Install),USB Driver (Software) (ver.1.0)") instead.

this driver link does not work. it links the most up to date drivers. i bricked my phone forgetting to put froyo instead of eclair and then using a the newest midnight rom. ahhh i need those drivers

so i basically followed this guide and put on eclair instead of froyo. Then i flashed the newest midnight rom and now have no way of calling people etc. I want to odin but i cant because the computer does not recognize the phone using the newest samsung drivers; at least this is what I think. can someone please help me

I'm not sure I understand. I just checked every link to drivers in post #1 and they all work.

I followed the instructions in this guide and installed the DK28 tar. It worked beautifully. I now have froyo on my Epic 4g and every seems to be working perfectly. I tried the custom rom approach and bricked my phone. This procedure recovered and allowed me to have froyo, with all of the sprint and samsung stuff that was there when I bought it. I do have to redownload all of my apps again, but I am ok with that. Thank you for the post.

is there a way to get sprint navigation back ? just did my first root ext4 and trulyepic rom...love it was easy to do...however i used the sprint nav a lot.

Please help, did I just kill my phone?

I have an epic 4g and after waiting all this time for an official froyo release I decided to try this.

My phone is in eclair but I still wanted to do a complete restore to eclair before going to froyo. I went step by step, installed the samsung 64 bit drivers, connected the phone in download mode and odin recognized it and started the process.. before it finished there was a half a second power outage in a section of my house and the computer turned off.

Now my phone is basicaly bricked, when I turn it on nothing shows up but a weird icon showing no connection.

The obvious solution would be to go to download mode and try again from scratch, except now odin wont recognized my phone in download mode.. it did before the power outage but now that my phone basicaly has no operating system (i would imagine as it was cut off in mid process) there is no way to connect it to the pc.

I tried disconecting all my usb devices, rebooting the machine, uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling. Basicaly everything.. no usb port in my machine works.. and I have no idea what to do and my phone is dead.

I was installing eclair through odin, I was doing the restore and then my pc crashed and everything turned off.. Now the phone shows this weird exclamation symbol in a triangle when i turn it on and I cant do anything.

I try to do the process again but now odin doesnt recognize the phone in download mode, it did so before without any problems but now after this crash my phone seems dead and unrecognizable

You might want to consider trying one of the other methods listed in the How to Factory Restore [Bricked Phone] thread. There are alternate methods for when Odin doesn't recognize the phone.

I installed the 32bit drivers instead and it worked.. dont know why, since it worked well with the 64bit at first but I wont complain.

May I ask how long this process should take? odin is stuck at a part where it says factoryfs.rfs and the progress bar isnt moving

It takes a while. If all else fails, disconnect the phone, pull the battery on it, wait a bit, restart Odin, put the phone in download, and reconnect it. Then try to do it.

Sometimes Odin gets stuck and simply closing the application and restarting it doesn't cut it.. You may have to reboot your computer and restart Odin and the process over again. The whole restore process should only take a about 5 minutes to restore Eclair.

I bricked my phone and re-rooted it (used Odin to put DK28 back on it). Now it'll kinda pretend to re-boot itself. I'll be messing with it, then the screen will go black and then the lock screen will pop back up as if the whole phone went back off and then on again.

Your stuck in what they call a boot loop. I would recommend reflashing if your on a custom ROM or reinstalling Stock Froyo. Usually this happens if you flash something that isn't compatible or corrupted.

OK im a little worried I followed the instructions on How to restore to froyo dk28

and during the odin process the green rectangle froze in one place and phone turned off and I believe bricked :(...
I was running the pit and pda file and had unchecked and only left the auto reboot. help android gods?

If at first you don't succeed, try try again ;)

If the phone seems completely dead just remove and replace the battery. Get back into download mode and start over.

Okay now my phone doesnt show that it is on or off...the usb is plugged in and the charger light doesnt come on :(. help anyone?

Also the battery may have been in the 15-20% range could this be the problem? also ragnarokx i cant get back into download mode since the phone seems to be unresponsive, even with the step of taking out the battery and putting it back in.
