I just learned that Chromebooks have a hidden night mode called Night Light (similar to the Pixel phones, and possibly other phones on Oreo). To activate it, you have to go to the Chrome flags screen and enable it, then restart the machine. Be aware that your Chromebook might look like it's stuck on a blank screen for 30-60 seconds after you press restart, but it should eventually reboot -- this is what happened on my Lenovo Thinkpad 13. Also remember that Chrome flags are experimental, so there's no guarantee they'll work correctly on every device.

Once you've enabled it, it is a toggle in the system tray at the lower right. You can also schedule it like in Oreo.
