How to keep the music player active on my Gear S2

I own a Samsung Gear S2 and a Sony Z5 compact (nougat). When running, operating the telephone from inside the pouch is difficult, so I'd like to control the music playing on the Z5C through the music player on the S2; turn the dial for volume, tap the screen for next. This works fine, but everytime the S2's screen wakes up, I see the time and have to navigate to the music player again, either the widget or start the app.

How do I keep the music player active?

I haven't tried this but I wonder if you turn your display to "always on" if it will stay on the music widget the entire time? of course the trade-off will be the battery drain while you're working out with the watch face on the whole time but maybe it's worth it for easier control of your music
