I'm having problems viewing videos on my new Galaxy Note II.

One .flv will display the image and play the sound, while another .flv will display a black screen with sound only?

One .mp4 will display the image and play the sound, while another .mp4 will display a black screen with sound only?

Also on the Note, what is the difference between 'MOVIES' and 'VIDEO' in the 'Play Movies' built-in app - 'Google Play'.

What app are you using? If the stock "video player" didn't work, try mxplayer or qqplayer...

I searched the main page of Google Play and only see Movie there, not video

Google Play Movies has tabs for Movies and TV you can buy or rent from Google Play. It also has a Personal Videos tab for other videos it recognizes on your storage or SD Card.

I've used Moboplayer in the past for weird formats on other devices but haven't needed it on the Note 2, as the built in (Samsung) Video Player has handled everything I've tried to play so far.

Try mx player. It has a hardware and software decoder. It will play many codecs. Your issues are most likely caused by different bit rate recordings. I have not founda single file mx player could not play.

First off, the file format is only a container for the codecs within. In this case you're using FLV files which are flash based. The fact that you could even play one of these using the stock video player is incredible. It seems that one of these FLV files is using a specific codec that the stock player couldn't understand.

Download a different media player as already suggested and it should play fine.
