What's a "nandroid" and when and why do we make one? Still trying to learn everything here.

Nandroid backup is done through clockworkmod recovery. It is basically taking a snapshot of your entire phone and all systems - build, kernel, rom, apps, launcher, set up, contacts, text messages, everything. Go to recovery and in the first menu you will see backup and restore, hit the power button and the next menu will give you backup, restore, and advanced restore. Don't worry about the advanced. Simply hit the power button when backup is highlighted and it will go. It takes quite a long time, 10 minutes perhaps depending on how much you have on your phone. You would use the restore option to restore any of these backups. They are titled by date and time you did the backup, so when my phone is plugged into my pc, I go into the sd card directory, open the clockwork folder, open the backup sub folder, right click on my nandroid backup and rename it based on what was in the backup. I did a backup earlier, and when I go in and name it I will label it EB01SC2.9_NitroDark because I had superclean 2.9 with the NitroDark theme. I also did a backup of just sc 2.9 with the nuance patch and will probably just name that on EB01SC2.9 so I know it is basically just the sc 2.9 ROM.
Problem with restoring nandroid backups is you have to make sure to backup your apps, contacts, and text messages because when you restore your nandroid backup you will not have any apps, contacts, or text messages you added in since you made your nandroid backup. If you back up all those through My Backup Pro you can then restore them after you restore your nandroid backup.

Edit: found what it was. Everytime before we flash anything we should make a nandroid back up?

You can, but you are going to end up with a huge list of backups. I don't do it as often, only when I create a build I really like and want to keep. It is really a matter of preference when you want to do a nandroid backup.

im not finding any previews or pics of the nitro dark theme and im curious about it anyone have pics screen shots or a link besides the one on post #2 ?

got ya thanks no big hurry cause the steel blue is absolutely sick

Agreed - From my "Blue Era"~~

Restore Update Part B:
Restore of Steel Blue 1.4 (used CWM red - no wipe of D-cache or cache partition.. Backup made 12 hours previous.
Was running previous restore of the SC 2.9 first restore. Battery at 21%

Result: Fail - FC loop - "Sorry Use *#9900# Gmail error".. etc.... all apps faulting - this continues through all apps - multiple fails to load, haptic feedback constantly - results of apps faulting on boot.

Battery pull and boot to recovery, Wiped cache partition, and D-cache - Restoring Original 2.9 clean load.

Result: Successful restore. - updating market apps. Will let the battery charge overnight. Will try to restore NitroComb 1.0 next.

Restore Update Part C:

Before testing DroidXcon's no wipe ODIN package for 2.9 I did a nandroid backup of my current build which included everything - 2.9nv, NitroComb theme, nuance patch, tw clock patch, and the new media scan sript.

After testing, I figured this would be a good time to restore one of those nandroids. Figured I'd start with the big enchilada since that is our goal.

Result - FAIL fc loop at boot animation. Also something really strange with this one. The NitroComb and a pretty cool boot animation with a Lloy droid standing there and a blue circle moving around him. But when I booted the phone on this one I got the honeycomb boot animation.

I am now in the process of trying to restore the other three nandroid backups I created going from biggest to smallest with a wipe of data, cache, and dalvik between each. So discouraging. Seems like these nandroid backups can't handle a lot of stuff.

More Results - FAIL AGAIN
Three of the four restores have resulted in a fc loop at boot animation. I am now at the first Nandroid backup I did on 2.9 which should be just 2.9 and the nuance patch

Restore Update Part D:

Pass, sort of

My first 2.9 nandroid backup of just 2.9 and the nuance patch successfully restored. Like I said in my previous post it seems like you can't load a lot of stuff into a nandroid backup and have a successful restore. Now onto testing how much stuff you can have loaded in there and get a successful restore.

are cache wipes still required for themes on 2.9 like they were on 2.8 and previous versions?

Hate to say it but you've wiped cache and dalvik cache so it looks like only a data wipe is going to solve your problem there is something in your system that is corrupted or not compatible and wiping cache and dalvik have not solved the problem. Hope you have your contacts and apps backed up. Unless someone else has a better idea.

I can tell you that some choose to wipe both the Dalvik cache/ cache partition before loading a new ROM and some do not... it is strongly recommended by the developers of both ROMs and themes.. Some posters don't have issues with not clearing the caches - others end up with bricks. I have opted to clear between ROMs and some themes just for a measure of comfort.. it just adds to the boot time.

Yes a wipe data is going to wipe your contacts and apps, so make sure you have all your apps backed up through TiBu and you back up your contacts through either backup assistant on the phone or exporting them to the sd card. Then after the wipe, do a wipe of cache and dalvik again, then flash 2.9.

If you like a dark theme, Nitroglycerine33 has two awesome dark themes. I have tried both of them out and they worked flawlessly with 2.9. One is NitroDark and the other is NitroComb.

u have been more then helpful these last weeks ive asked alot ill check them out once ive got everything back to normal i like the nitro comb did u do the theme and app theme ?

Hey JaeKar, I saw someone was just asking about wiping cache and dalvik just a short time ago. I just noticed something interesting. I just flashed Nitrocomb, and in the script that shows while it is installing and is still sitting on my screen, one of the lines says cleaning dalvik cache. I never bothered to read those things before and find that kind of interesting.
