How to make a good in-game tutorial?

Hey all, I thought about posting this in the Software Development forums, but I thought here would be better since I want help from users as well as developers :P

My roommate and I are finishing up with our first Android game. Not many people downloaded it, but I think that's actually good for now since very few people seem to actually know EXACTLY what to do when they start playing. There's a howto screen, but nobody goes to that.

In the game, there's a bunch of falling objects, such as debris, power ups, fireballs, etc. You're a ninja and your job is to jump onto things, which automatically latches you to them, then you can jump off of it again to get higher. Collide with power ups to attain then. Dodge fireballs at all costs (well, except falling to your death I suppose). But the main idea is to jump onto falling debris and then jump off again, not to dodge everything. And that's the problem right there. Everyone thinks you're supposed to dodge the falling stuff when you're only supposed to dodge fireballs.

I just put in a very, very simple tutorial, if you would even call it that. It tells you to tap where you want to go when you first start, then when stuff starts falling it tells you to jump onto rubble then jump off to get higher. Is there anything else I can do to make it seem more intuitive? Also, general feedback and criticism is welcome :D

Or general thoughts on what a good in-game tutorial is like in general?

Here's the app, called Ninja's Ascent:
