Hi everybody,

This is probably a commonly asked question but I'm having a hard time figuring it out . I already made my maps for Toronto available offline on Google Maps. When I try to get directions it says I can't because I don't have a network connection. Anybody have some tips for me?

You'll need an app that supports calculation of directions (not just map data) when offline. Google Maps does not currently support this functionality. Sorry.

The GPS itself will work fine, in that it will find your location successfully. The maps will work fine, in that you'll be able to see your position on a moving map unless you drop out of the area where you've preloaded your maps.

Unfortunately, calculation of directions requires a connection to the Google servers. In fact, if you go "off course", Google needs a data connection to recalculate your route.

Maybe they'll fix it and offer an offline algorithm to calculate routes, but right now that calculation all happens on a server, not on your phone.

Offline maps were still a Labs feature back in June when I went to Toronto for NXNE but I DLed them in case I needed to get around closed streets and whatnot. As notehoy has covered, all it can do is plot your position on the map, not give directions.
